Spanish Day – The Flamenco Rock Opera. Spanish Day brings to the stage renowned flamenco dancers and musicians from Spain with a rock and roll band from the United States. The collaboration between Arte y Pureza, Band Sir Sultry, and famed Gypsy singer Inés Bacán will hit the stage at the New Hazlett Theater on October 3rd , 2009 in Pittsburgh PA. Ethan Margolis from the U.S. who has lived in Spain for the past ten years worked with Spanish Gypsy Flamenco Artists to create the acclaimed Arte y Pureza Flamenco Company out of Seville, Spain. This Pittsburgh debut of their newest show - brings a highly anticipated show to the Pittsburgh stage having received rave reviews from past performances from the Los Angeles Times and New York Times.

The show’s aim is to unite rock n’ roll with all three elements of flamenco: dancing, singing and the guitar to create an evening where friendships, families and life experiences are explored, mourned, and celebrated onstage. This traditional flamenco troupe, based in Seville, Spain, performs the art of both music and dance making great use of improvisation to create a sense of emotional intensity.

“We created Spanish Day – The Flamenco Rock Opera as an exploration of culture as we look upon two musical worlds thousands of miles apart,” said Margolis. “It demonstrates the beauty and importance of culture and ethnicity.”

This flamenco/rock opera amalgam tells the story of a young man, Michael Miller, who leaves a broken musician's household in the USA to travel to Spain where he discovers the exotic world of Gypsy Flamenco and falls in love with the music. Michael is only able to find peace when he dreams of Spain and its exotic rhythms. He finds true love and acceptance with his entrance into a world where family is the most important gift of life.

In addition to the flamenco performance by Arte y Pureza and music by Sir Sultry, Bill Watterson, creator of the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip has created a mix of scratchboard drawings depicting the characters in "Spanish Day". His images will be shown by projector during the performance. Spanish Day the Flamenco Rock Opera performed by Sir Sultry with Arte y Pureza dancers and singers from Seville, Spain will be performing on Saturday, October 3rd at 8:00pm. The performance will be at the Hazlett Theater located at Allegheny Square E in Pittsburgh. Tickets can be purchased by calling 412 612 0499 or www.gsfapittsburgh.org.

About Arte y Pureza
The much acclaimed Arte y Pureza Flamenco Company is directed by Ethan Margolis and led by Spanish artists José “el Oruco” and San Diego native Cihtli Ocampo (dancer in Tony Gatlif's film "Exils"). The troupe is an amazing display of improvisation and mastery within the oldest styles of gypsy song and dance. In March of 2009, both Ethan Margolis and Cihtli Ocampo performed with Pittsburgh’s Quantum Theater in its production of Yerma by Garcia Lorca. The two performers received rave reviews for their work in Yerma. Pittsburgh Magazine stated, ‘Cihtli Ocampo may be the most dramatic figure on-stage this year...’ and The Pittsburgh Post Gazette called Margolis’s music for Yerma ‘stirring and original’. Arte y Pureza Flamenco Company has also garnished reviews from the NY Times as ‘a triumph’ and from the LA Times for ‘exemplary musicianship.’
