RE: test (in reply to JasonMcGuire

Felix just mentioned to me that he would love to record some cante for an accompaniment challenge and judge it as well. Some one needs to work out the hosting details/judges etc. and such.

Felix also said that he would give as a prize a one hour private lesson of cante accompaniment to the winner online via Skype.

Enjoy!

OU OU OU can I ?? this will be the biggest best one yet

I am thinking about 3 letras of solea por bulerias..plus one por bulerias

you record Felix with just palmas or compas loop

challengers have to find a nice intro that matches the mood and 1 or 2 falsetas in between letras that compliment it and brake out the letras..as well as accompanying the cante

I think it will be better to just do 2 letras of SpB with compas in between. That could keep it in reach for some of the intermediate and even some beginners........ thats my 2 cents.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. I feel like I know all of you already. It will be nice getting more involved.

Jason: It was nice meeting you and Yaelisa too. Chloe and Delilah really enjoyed the dance workshop with Yaelisa!

Ricardo: David is leaving for Spain tomorrow morning for two months. In the past, he's mentioned knowing you, and even though we've never met I can say I know you from the foro!

It feels like a weight has been lifted now that this thread has taken the turn it needed to take!

wow, an accompaniment challange, thats gggrreat. Good thinkin Jason and Felix For me the playing in this challange will be the most interresting to hear, 'cause Im taking my first steps with accompanying.

I also agree with Jason keeping it simple and not adding falsetas. As a beginner/intermediate player I would also love to partisipate and try it. And solea por buleria goes hand in hand with the coming intermediate challenge 'cause we are planning to play some falseta for it.

oh ok sorry i missed that before ...ok sure.. i will change it in the rules...but how about we say falsetas optional...not a must but optional...that way it caters for any level and everyone ?

i dont wanna push too much but is 2 letras of solea and 1 of bulerias to end it ok ?

itl just feel weird to end it on solea...plus i have allready attached the compas change in the compas track i uploaded for you guys to hear and approve..

but i am flexible ..just listen to the compas track and feel free to decide what you wanna do with it and what you wanna change and cut out etc..then you can get started...and we can get started on organizing

Suggested Compas Track

Look guys, I understand that Ruben seems pretty out there at times (though at rare times his posts are so surprisingly well punctuated and rambling free that I wonder whether he usually posts whenever he's had a few beers), and it's not nice that he insulted people around here, especially Jason, but I don't think attributing a mental illness to him is the right way about this either.

Stuck up views are pretty common in flamenco, are they not? Either way, why don't we let him continue posting his lessons and views and just accept them as his view of the world, learn from his lessons, and move on. It's not worth it worrying about it to this degree.

Anyway, that's just me I guess...

Hello fellow Flamencos!

I've been lurking here for several years. I've always enjoyed reading the interesting posts, but have always been too lazy to get really involved except for a few posts here and there. Recently, I couldn't resist chiming in on this thread, and now I'm into it, and having fun. No more lurking...I've seen the light!

Welcome, welcome, welcome Felix!! What a great offer. We have said before that we on the Foro don't have enough contact with cantaors here (actually hardly any!). We have a few dancers, well not many of those even! But cante is the essence, so this will be fantastic.

I'm not ready to join in a challenge like this yet, but I know I'll learn lots from observing. If I can help with any admin job, just say the word, I'm on it!

Hey Flo,

That track is too fast. Slow it down a bit. That sounds like 160bpm. Lets take it WAY down and emphasize the "solea" in solea por bulerias. 140 - 145bpm.

RE: Performance and explanation of P... (in reply to Guest

Here is a response from my teacher and dear friend Pedro Cortes. Pedro has just started his own lesson website similar to my own where he imparts his imense knowledge of flamenco. http://flamenco-classes.com/

"Ok,What is Paco de lucia Technique ? Who can say they are an authority on Paco de Lucia. No one!!!!!!!!! except Paco. First of all, unlike Manolo Sanlucar, Paco never taught any offical students...He may have given out some pointers but he never had formal students. How do I know this....well I've known Paco since he was 16 years of age. He came to the US with Jose Greco with his brother Pepe. At that time he only played all of Nino Recardo's material...he still wasn't the Paco that we know today. In NYC he met Sabicas and Mario Escudero the monsters of that era. Sabicas during that time told Paco that if he was to be great (even though he had mind boggling technique) he would have to be a creator and not sound like anyone else. At that time Paco was mind boggled and decieded to attemp to become a composer.

When he got back to Spain he recorded an album in which he recorded Impetu (composed by Mario escudero) and some new pieces that he began to compose. As a result of his meeting with Sabicas and Mario Escudero he was inspired to change his playing style and thats when he came up with his first album ( Fuente Y Caudal) that was truly all his composition. That was the begining of Paco as we know Paco today. Next time he showed up in NY he did a concert in Carnagie Hall. In fact my father (Pedro Cortes senior) accompanied Paco on his rumba Entre dos Aguas in that concert. He brought with him... on the sneak... his then girl freind Casilda who he later married and had three children with. So like I said before, I've known Paco for awhile. One lesson that I learned by my father and later on demonstrated by Paco was to have respect and to be humble, (The number one Rule)..... Here is what happened.....Paco came to NYC and Sabicas called up my father and told him, "compadre come on over, Pacito is on his way over and we are going to hang out a little." So my dad told me get ready we are going over Sabicas house and Paco is going over there also..... I was extatic!!!! Anyway to make the story short, when we got there Paco and Sabicas were playing together and Sabicas was playing incredible and Paco was accompaning Sabicas and at one point Sabicas asked Paco come on play some of your stuff!! What did Paco do? He smiled like an angel and played a bunch of Sabicas falsetas. Thats when I realized the kind of person he was....not only the monster of the new era but also a saint. He could have showed off and did some incredible picados, but no not him he just smiled and played Sabicas material.

So the first lesson Paco can teach all of us is to be humble and have respect. Now if we think about it what is technique. How do we aquire it? Well a monkey locked up in a room practising properly can learn to do Alzapua and Picado.....Technique is just may hours of scales,arpegio,alzapua,ect..... Now to play the guitar is something different....if Sabicas wouldn't have said to Paco you need to be a composer, maybe Paco wouldn't have been the monster that he is today. Why is Vicente Amigo who he is? Why is Tomatito who he is? And why is Manolo Sanlucar who he is?.... Because they are not Paco de Lucia... There is only one Paco! The Monster of this Era. So they became who they are and they play the way they feel the music not the way Paco feels it. No one can sound like Paco because what makes Paco ,Paco, is his soul not his picado.
Paco has been touched by the hand of god and there is only one Paco. So my freinds its good to strive to have Paco-like technique but don't forget to be who you are. Teachers like Jason Mcguire, Adam del Monte, Chuscales, Richard Marlow are who they are... they all sound like themselves and have lot to offer as teachers. Yes they are not Paco, but there is only one Paco. Also as students you shouldn't listen to snake charmers that hypnotize you with flashy bull$hit...rather take a look at who they have worked with....look at their track record..... thats what speaks for people not what they say, but rather who they,ve worked with.

I have worked with: La Titi, Merches Esmeralda, Manolete, Antonio Carmona (from Ketama) La Farrucita, Domingo Ortega, Lola Flores and Jose Greco. I can keep on going beacuse I have 38 years of experience. In other words.. just look at the teacher's history.... all great Flamenco Guitar Soloist have gone through many years of playing for singers and dancers. Without those skills you don't have the power or the sensitivity to become a good soloist. With all that said, let us all get along and respect each other....we all have a lot ot offer!"

Regards
Pedro Cortes

I really think Ruben is mentally ill. I mean this with good intentions and not in a joking way. From reading his posts, he is all over the place doesn't really answer any questions in a direct way and his tone is always mercurial or manic if you ask me. I hope he gets help and stabilizes a bit, as he has SOME things that may help players in learning falsetas. I think everyone here welcomed him warmly, and everyone was also extremely patient. Lithium or abilify should help.
