CALIMA TAB HERE

I noticed that there have been several requests for Calima by Gerardo Nuñez.
This tab is available in the book "la tecnica al servicio del arte" which is now out of print. I didnt want to upload a photocopy of the tab as this would still infringe copyright so what I decided to do was copy out and upload the tab.

However as I started copying I realised that there were several minor errors. As I continued I found more errors and by the end of the first page realised that the printed version is completely unplayable. Its certainly not reflect Gerardos right hand technique and the fingering doesnt make sense.

So here is a correct tab which I can upload free from copyright as it is quite different form the original printed version

ABOUT THIS TAB
Firstly download to your desktop and change extension from .txt to .jpg to read

Lines 1 and 2 are similar to the book. There was an error on bass note placing. The bass falls on the arpeggio in the first line and on the triplet in the second line.

Line 3 has a, m,i arpeggios. The book tabs them i,m,a and then gets the last arpeggio wrong

Line 4 starts with the Correct arpeggio before the descending scale. The motif at the end is completely different to the book (which doesnt mention the slide to 8th fret and is unplayable)

Line 5 has corrected right hand fingering for the arpeggios

Line 6 has corrected first chord and final arpeggio (which was wrong for both left and right hand)

Good luck. More to come!!

RE: CALIMA TAB HERE (in reply to Pimientito

Here is page 2

First pattern is a simplified arpeggio por Buleria.
Second pattern is a more complex one. The right hand is exactly the same as the
buleria pattern in trafalgar and as usual Gerardo mixes them up as he wants to.

Line 6 has a couple of changes from the book with the corrected initial arpeggio and descending run. Note the open E string.

Lines 7 and 8 have small alterations. Gerardo plays the last compas as I have tabbed .

More to come...............

Thx Pimiento for yet another great Gerardo tab! Altough I'm not the greatest fan of alternate tunings (except rondena) I like this piece very much! Thx again.

RE: CALIMA TAB HERE (in reply to Pimientito

Here is page 3

Again there a variations from the book. Line 3 is the same as the book.
The first time you play through this falseta jump from line 3 to line 5. This has a arpeggio variation that is not in the book.
Line 4 is played when you start the second time. Its another compas variation that isn't in the book.
Line 6 has been corrected. There is a C# in the triplet motif and not a C natural as published.
Line 8 has the ornament in the compas.

RE: CALIMA TAB HERE (in reply to Pimientito

Here is page 4

Lots of corrections this time. For the final part of the previous phrase Ive added an arpeggio variation that he uses. The book publishes the same arpeggio as I wrote on page 3. This variation is closer and one that he uses here and is also one that he uses all the time on "Siempre es tarde"

Line 3 has been corrected. There are no first finger strokes as published.
Line 4 has been corrected. The hammer on to the 4th fret is used rather than the published open B string.
Lines 5 and 6 also corrected. The book publishes a pull off on the first string. Gerardo is actually doing a double stroke with the thumb on the first string. It takes a bit of practise but sounds good when you get used to it.

Line 7 has the correct chord sequence. The book publishes the only the first chord correctly.

Line 8 is slightly different from the book. Im pretty sure he is doing a double down stroke with the thumb in the second group of each chord.

More to come as I get time to do it. As you can see there are so many mistakes its not too surprising the book is out of print!

Fantastic tab!! Thank you so much! It was very frustrating to not have any access to this piece.

Any chance you might do Marques de Porrina in the future? :-)

Thanks again

RE: CALIMA TAB HERE (in reply to Doitsujin

Actually this one is not as hard to play as some of the others. Its a lot easier than "Siempre es tarde" I've gone through 3 or 4 of the bulerias and once you get used to the right hand the same finger patterns keep coming up again and again. I'll try to post some more of this tab over the weekend.

RE: CALIMA TAB HERE (in reply to Pimientito

Here is the Finale

Ok...I know its not in order but I finished the finale before some of the middle bits. Its the last 2 pages of the published tab. The first 2 lines are as published. I added 3 note in brackets which I think he plays on the recording but are omited on the tab. It sounds OK either way.

The next 2 lines have a double chord played with an upstroke of the thumb and not a single chord as published. I have also tabbed the correct rasgueo at the end of the phrase.

The next line starts on the 9th fret and not the 8th as published

Final chords have been corrected. Sometimes Gerardo omits the 4th finger altogether and just plays the barre with 2cd finger on second string. I have not written compas. I assume that if you can play this piece so far that you can work out what the compas is for this part.

Thank you very much for the tab! Its the best one for a while. And such an interesting one, too. I will upload a tab of a complete composition too as thank you. I hope you´ll like it. I will upload it this week.

RE: CALIMA TAB HERE (in reply to Doitsujin

Thanks Doit. I've nearly done it now and i have enjoyed learning this piece at the same time.

Here is page 6

This is the page before the finale so i only have to finish page 5 now.
This page is that really cool pulgar falseta.
Line 1 is as published
Line 2 has been corrected. There are 2 triplet groups and not 3
Line 3 is as published
Line 4 has been corrected with the chromatic descending run on the 5th string.
The rest is straight forward. Again I havent tabbed the compas, its improvised.

RE: CALIMA TAB HERE (in reply to Pimientito

Here is page 5

Thats it...thats the whole tab.
Line 1 is the same as the book. I dont think its quite correct but its close enough.I cant quite get what he is doing exactly on the last line of page 4 and the first line of this page. This is pretty close but I'm still not sure. His thumb is just so fast that even slowed down I still cant get it. Maybe i'll ask him in Sanlucar. Everything else on the page has had minor corrections.

Generally I think this tab is pretty acurate. However if there is an error here or there you can correct it yourselves. Frankly this tab is way better than the published version anyway and is probably the most accurate one that exists so so I am quite happy with it.

Here is the link to Gerardo playing the piece

Good luck guys and happy practicing

Great work Pimientito. It´s so sad that whenever excellent tabs are posted, nobody replies... They all suck the tabs silently.

Well,.. here as I promised a tab I wrote for you Pimientito. Its the fandango of Rafael cortes from gitanos del agua. Its in the harmony of minera. He showed me the refrain and the first two parts,.. the rest wasn´t so hard to tab after that. I completle transcribed with the solo guitar and I added a second guitar which strums the chords. But the original acomp is 2 frets lower por tarano. Well,.. thats not so important. I only made a small change of the last picado of the first part to a ligado-combination because he played it so ****ing fast with a variation which was a way to fast,..also for slowing down.. :./
It just for you Pimientito, I hope you like it. I send it a while back to moderntoque and they promised to upload it when they have time.. (As they promised me to upload a couple of other transcribtion I´ve send them) But my transcribtions never appeared on their site.. They must be very busy or dont like my tabs... :./

Thanks for your transcribtion. Its really fantastic!

Yeah...150 hits and only three people say thanks.
I've been trying to tab Gerardos stuff that hasnt been published already or is easily available. This is a classic so its here for posterity. If you are laerning this piece, please let me know how its going and give me some feedback, corrections, comments etc.
Anyway thanks Doit for your appreciation and your tab. I really love Rafeal cortes playing. I cant connect to it and I dont have Gp5 so I'll send you an email.

Thats excellent work, Pimiento.
Really nice how much effort some of you put into this!

But as long as I don't play "Trafalgar" perfectly, I won't try any new Gerardo piece.
This is going to take some time

Thanks guys!!
Burshe, this piece is (in my opinion) considerably easier than Trafalgar. I have been struggling with Trafalgar for years but I got Calima much more easily.
(sounds like diseases i picked up )
It sounds harder because of the unusual tuning. I would say that if you learn this it might be easier to learn Trafalgar later. Trafalgar and siempre es tarde are both incredibly difficult compositions and require a knowledge of all of Gerados right hand techniques.

RE: CALIMA TAB HERE (in reply to Pimientito

I haven't been around much lately, i did check this thread and skim read it without even opening the attachments, which accounts for one or two hits without thanks, so i just wanted to check in and say that this is an amazing piece of work to have transcribed and really generous of you to share it here, thank you....

I actually have the out of print book, and have played around with the thumb study (which i learnt on a course with gerardo originally before i had the book), the verdiales (great picado study) and some of the bulerias. It's a bit sad really that Gerardo's music is transcribed so badly, I'm guessing the other book done by Faucher is probably more accurate (i think they fell out or something didn't they? so Faucher didn't get the job for vol 2?).

I haven't really ever got into altered tunings, not even rondeña, but one day i might get around to having a go at this piece!

RE: CALIMA TAB HERE (in reply to Pimientito

Well I have to say, I've been in ecstasy for the last week playing and listening to this piece every day.

"Calima" was one of the first Flamenco CDs I ever bought, back when I first got interested in Flamenco...I remember I read a review in a small free paper when it had just been released in Canada and I went out and bought it and had my mind blown! and the title track really struck me as one of the most innovative and beautiful compositions I had ever heard

Anyway...I digress...what a beautiful, incredible piece to play though

Thanks again Pimientito, it's a great tab and seems to be spot on, as far as I can tell....now I just have to spend countless hours learning how to not butcher it...and then find a pianist and percussionist who want to perform it!!!

Ole!

Thanks Pimientito.
I downloaded and changed the extension but for some reason it didn't open.
I looked at the video however, later on in the thread and realize this is way beyond me. So thanks for all your work. I'll keep practising.
Cheers
Jim.

I think perhaps you misread your statistics. While some may not appreciated your work enough to thank you for all that hard work (and boy do I know it's hard) perhaps like me, most of us can't open the attachments. Google says:"The site uses SSL, but Google Chrome has detected either high-risk insecure content on the page or problems with the site’s certificate. "
I'm presently correcting some tab work and it takes its toll on me. I'm mad enough that when I have finished it, I'll transpose it to another key. I just get a blank page when I click on your attachments and if I save them, I get an error when opening them. Quite disappointing for me. But thanks for your hard work and intention.
