i was updating my iPod last night and just realized that i had removed all of Vicente Amigo's stuff a year ago and hadn't really missed hearing him. Added only a couple of Vicente songs last night.

are there any artist you used to listen obsessively to that now no longer commands your attention?

just wondering.

mostly non flamenco stuff. only to make room for more flamenco stuff.
but i can see myself getting rid of some solo guitar albums and replacing them with more cante in the future.

ricecracker, I seem to listen to all of my fave artists obsessively..

Its almost a bit of a crap situation because, of course, in the end you have listened to them so much you have no need for them, its a bit sad.
but then I couldn't not listen to them at that time where you're really feeling their music and simply must have it!!![&:][:@]

when andando el tiempo came out, I couldn't leave it alone, if I wasn't listening to it I was humming something from it or attempting to play something from it. then after a while I was done with it.
however I played a bit of it the other day and it was nice to rehear some of it.

so yeah give Vicente a re-listen! I'm learning a couple of his pieces so I've been doing just that recently.

Funny you ask that, just last night I was trying -not necessarily succesful- to delete from my now explosively full iPod a few things I am not sure why I uploaded in the first place:
(i) Juan Martin -cannot stand his sound;
(ii) Paco de Lucia's last effort, "Cositas Bonitas" -i am not getting it;
(iii) trying to remove some specific tracks, in flamenco those with drums, flutes or any other real or vitual orchestration. These undesirable incidents, just come up in a flowing playlist, like a crumb of the cork against your lips while enjoying a perfect wine... so i finally decided to spit them out.

i also realized that agujetas, chocolate, jose merce have been left out of my iPod though not purposely. they have been re-inserted into the rotation.

jesus torres and pepe justica are getting the most playing time right now.

I removed Medea from Manolo Sanlucar, also cositas buenas of Paco, Jeronimo, and Canizares with Potito.

Its strange,...but I hear a lot buleria de Jerez at the moment. At first I uploaded Capullo, than morao morao of moraito, and Familia de la Morena and Zambos. These are 2 complete CDs only buleria de Jerez..and all the familymembers are singing one bulerias.. Its great when the older people go for it.

Ah yes.. and I uploaded Brillo de luna of Guadiana. The siguirya got me. Its very modern with synthesizer, and.. IMO pure feeling.

while my tastes always tend to focus on something for awhile, i never actually "remove" other stuff from my mind or "playlist". I would go crazy without listening to music for just one day. Could be anything. Last week i was into some old 80's rock classics...
the other day Parrita (gypsy flamenco pop type singer). Today was Zambo...I am craZy

In my Mp3 (2gb all flamenco) there´s one solo guitar album "Jondura" by Parilla de Jerez. Besides its all cante. I get tired of most cd´s but I never get tired of Camaron with PDL. Camarons first 6 or 7 albums will always be there and I hardly ever skip a track.

Recently deleted some Carlos Montoya material, the way he whacks the living hell out of his rasguedos at the beginning of every piece became annoying to both my ears and my speakers. I had to remove some other solo guitar stuff too, as it begins to get a little monotonous after a while; need more cante! I'll never get tired of classical and eastern European gypsy jazz/folk stuff, so that'll stay on my iPod indefinitely.

I want to hear more female singers by the way, does anyone have suggestions in addition to Estrella Morente?

Montse Cortes is quickly becoming my favorite younger-generation cantaora. Paquera de Jerez is hard to beat in the 60s/70s......

I can't stand these new poppish sounding pieces by Vicente, even If he hasn't lost anything of his creativity (Tangos del arco bajo e.g. is breathtaking playing).

I listen to his first album everyday I can. so I do to all the other recordings.

All the non-flamenco stuff totally disappeard from my playlists, except for the preludes of Sergej Rachmaninoff.

Estrella is very influenced by La Niña de los Peines.

I have different folders in my ipod.

Flamenco, Persian music, Smooth Jazz and deep House music (what a combination! lol).

It depends in which mood i am an what i am doing.

When i go for jogging, i really like to hear those deep house rythms.
You forget that you are jogging and the rythm drives you on.

When i wake up sundays late, i start the day with some Smooth Jazz. [:D]

Just to let you know what i mean, here is a little upload. First minute Smooth Jazz, then deep house [:D] (I know most of you might hate it, but i like it!). I mean it is quite unusual for someone who likes flamenco and plays flamenco guitar to hear such "dumb" music,,,,but thats me... (i didnt upload any persian music, that might be too much for you :)

And of course, rest of the time, i hear flamenco:

I dont have complete Albums on my "playlist".
Because there is no Album which i like completely and 100%.
I combine different pieces from different Artists and Albums to keep it interesting and varying.

At the moment i am in to Esperanza Fernandez, Montse Cortes, Marina Heredia, La Susi, some pieces from Pacos Cositas Buenas,
Antonio Rey, Guadiana (and David Carraduela), Javier Limon, and some others....

I removed some solo guitar pieces which i heard over and over again and which i got a little bit tired of (but i am sure
after few weeks i want to hear them again)

Kate, I'm so glad you mentioned Pastora Pavón (La Niña)--she had a voice unique to flamenco: a keening, urgent sound that forced the listener to pay attention right now to what she was singing; she was one of those rare singers who can be relied upon to give you chills and gooseflesh, especially in her siguiriyas, soleares and saetas. The CD of her in the series Grands Cantaores du Flamenco (Le Chant du Monde #LDX 274859) is a good introduction.

Another great cantaora was Manolita de Jerez, rarely recorded but a fabulous singer. She can be heard on the old Decca LP Danzas Flamencas that I've posted about before, and also on the Arhoolie CD Early Cante Flamenco, #CD-326. La Niña also can be found on this CD, along with much other great cante from the 1930s, 40s, and 50s.

A lot of fine singing by women (1970s-1980s) can be found on the 2-CD Ellas Dan el Cante (Mujeres en el Flamenco), RTVE #62095.

First post after a while just reading and enjoying other people's posts,

RE: female singers. Fantastic recommendations so far, to which I would add:

Marina Heredia (I get the feeling she's a bit overshadowed by Estrella Morente, but a really fine voice, and very interesting material on La voz del agua.)
Argentina, a young singer with a couple of albums out.
La Macanita - never listened to a whole album, just tracks, but I love what I've seen of her live (i.e. on tv/youtube).
Familia Montoya - a trio of female voices, my favourite being La Negra. Check her out on youtube too.
Encarna Anillo - Barcas de Plata (co-produced by Miguel Poveda who I think also contributes to a track). Also featuring two of the Familia Montoya ladies.
Lole Montoya, with or without Manuel. Not everyone's cup of tea, vocally, but, god, how beautiful was she!
Remedios Amaya
La Perla de Cadiz - one of the canonical female performers, much referenced, much loved.

Forgive me if I'm repeating names already mentioned.

As for what ends up being wiped off my player, anything not flamenco doesn't seem to last very long on it at the moment. [:)]
