I think this is a great idea! To me quarterly seems about right. I think we should only have two categories though - beginner and intermediate. I think advance players have enough reward and external motivations that they do not need a challenge. Advanced players can select the material and present it. I don't think anyone would be insulted. As a suggestion 1) beginners should be anyone that can't really hold a barre chord and has limited rhytmic skills, like they can't strum a buleria. 2) Intermediates can hold some barre chords and can strum a bulerias from good to better. 3) Advanced are anyone that doesn't fit in group 1 or 2. They are out of the challenge. They present the material and judge the competition. Every contestent should be judged, and everyone should be given one positive encouragement in the process so they can be motivated to improve. We can go through all of the major palos, the only problem is picking material that is suitable. For example, as a suggestion to the advanced players, I like the guajiras John O. uploaded, it is suitable for intermediates and first position parts can be simplified for beginners.
