XXX -> Spanish folk music (Jan. 13 2009 13:09:26)

Correct me but the actual spanish folk music is not flamenco, right? Its some music with bagpipes?
So my question would be, as i havent been to spain:

1. whats the role of this music? I mean... if you would make a list of what the Spaniards like to hear for music, or what they think to be their "nationally most important" music, what would they choose?

2. I ask this because in tourism sector, flamenco is always presented as THE spanish music. Is that really the case in Spain? Does everybody or the majority listen to flamenco? (i guess not). If not, why is it presented like that? My guess would be because the economy knows that flamenco has a certain effect on non-Spaniards. I think there is a very economic reason.

One of the main reasons flamenco isn't liked all over Spain (but is considered by non-Spaniards to be Spain's national music) is that it was "decreted" National-folk-music by Franco and "exported" as such.

the bagpipe you are thinking of is the gaita, and it is exclusively, in this case, from galicia. this music is not representative of the rest of spain but has much in common with portugal. just, with a bagpipe.

Back to topic:
I still think Franco is one (obviously of many,many) reasons.
Here in Germany there's a vaguely similar problem in the attitude to folk-music. It's considered by many to be reactionary-conservative and by some to be a relic of (part of) Nazi ideology.
"Good" music came from America (Rock'n Roll, Jazz ...) but many from my parents' generation considered that to be "degenerated noise"...
