Does anyone here think they really know what a Bulerias por Solea (also known as ‘Solea por Buleria’ and, in Jerez, ‘Bulerias pa’ eschuchar’ and ‘Bulerias al golpe’) is? I’ll bet that you don’t. Check out Estela’s synopsis of the discussion that took place on Ondajerez Radio that she participated in. It’s posted at the Triste y Azul forum. Maybe we could get her to post it here in English for those that don’t read Spanish. After reading it, you still probably won’t fully understand exactly what constitutes a BpS, but you’ll have a better appreciation for some of the ambiguities that exist in Flamenco.

The only thing I know is that no one really knows. I've received different explanations from almost anyone I've asked. Even in Sevilla, three teachers said completely different things.

Hi Phil,
How's things?

Tough question and as you suggest, no hard and fast answer.

My take on this is:

Solea por Buleria is a solea introduced into buleria, compas is the same so this can be technically achieved quite easilly, however, the feel has to be that of 'solea' ie that hint of sadness quite unlike buleria.

Buleria por Solea in the reverse, buleria put into solea in other words, the mood changes to create an outburst.

Buleria al golpe, I understand this to refer to compas counted in three's, silent beat 1 and golpe on cbeat 2 and 3.
A bit like playing normal buleria with golpe taps on beat 1 and 2 then, index strike sounding the chord on beat 3 followed by golpe taps on beats 4 and 5. The same idea.
My dancer however was taught that 'al golpe' is what I would refer to as Jerez ie. droping beat 6 in favour of 7 and 8.

Mmmm...?

Cheers
Jim.

There's quite a bit of knowledge already on this forum.

Try searching for "Bulerias por Solea" under Search - remember to set Search terms found in: to "Body and Message" and Time filter: to "within" and "All Topics"

?? I've never heard of bulerias al golpe being danced.

One can do counter-palmas to the Jerez 12-3-7-8-10 style that sound like al golpe but I don't think it is the same thing. As far as I know al golpe is always in 6 (or 3s)

Yea, that's my understanding. Just goes to show.
My dancer is taught by Felipe de Algeciras who's a top modernist style young dancer in Spain and in UK. Felipe also did the footwork used in the Banderas Zoro movie. Anyway, Jerez compas being described as 'Al Golpe' came from him.

Cheers
Jim

Andy,
what's funny to me is that people act like they know something which cannot be known! :)
