Pgh_flamenco -> Tomatito’s Appearance in The Devil’s Advocate (Jan. 9 2009 10:34:51)

I was flipping through the channels last night and came across the movie "The Devil’s Advocate" with Al Pacino. It was after a scene had started in a NYC restaurant with a Flamenco troupe performing on a small stage. I noticed Tomatito’s face in a brief shot. I checked IMDB http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118971/fullcredits#cast and he is listed under his name-- José Fernández Torres. Antonio Vargas Cortés and Elena Camunez Andújar were also in the movie.

Wow... I missed a serious opportunity to meet Don Tomatito, then. I wrote a number of lines for a client/friend in that movie, Ms Connie Nielsen whose part represented her first motion picture in the US (since she's been in a number of successful films, including the Gladiator). She was one of the attorneys and devils, and i regret to say i served as the inspiration for it (!!!)

I remember the Flamenco gig, but in those days i was listening to Bach and taking Cello lessons at Julliard. In fact, my student cello is with Connie... 'wonder if she's ever managed any note out of it?

Tomatito, Potito, Elena Andujar. Bulerias, and some tangos, perhaps some tanguillo guitar if I remember. THe DVD has an extended scene of it and the director Talyor Hackford talks a bit for his love of flamenco and wanted to hire some top guys to give that eerie feeling to any audience members that this guy really was the devil and could get the best of the best when ever he wanted. A little treat for true flamenco fans. Ironic, and sort of creepy, how potito has since turned from flamenco to the evangelic church to sing for god.[&:]

ACtually if you get to the end you realize the devil did not really "lose".[;)]

So why didn't he use their stage names? Al least a few people would wait to watch the credits to catch their names and buy an album/CD by them. I had to look up Tomatito on Spanish Wikipedia to find his given name.

I just gave you +1 for all that outrageous name-dropping.

If I ever sneak past your border guards and make it down to New York, I'm looking you up. I think you can afford to invite me to a fancy drink with umbrellas or some such fru-frus.

He's not a Dutchman; "Doitsujin" is Japanese for "German guy". (Whether he's a Japanese guy who lives in Germany, or a German who speaks Japanese, remains a mystery) [8|]

Just so's you know...

Really? Hmmm... That's embarrassing. I actually studied Japanese in college. Apparently I wasn't concentrating, on the subject matter.

Thanks for pointing it out in public. [8D]
