The difference is small. Its very subtle and you dont get a lot of volume out of the hole. I find that this and another guitar I made, felt more open and with a more spacious sound. They were more relaxed with the port open than when closed. If they had more overall volume, I think so, but I´m not totally sure. I´m building 2 flamencos with soundport right now, so hopefully I will know some more soon. I make the reinforcement and the hole before gluing the back, but you can do it after as well. I drill lots of litle holes and finish odd with a file and sandpaper.

I am sold on ports. It makes a really loud guitar even louder and more open. I had ports cut in both my negra and blanca. There is no reinforcement and the ports were done well after the guitars were built. I have been gigging with both guitars and have travled with them too. No problems and I am notoriously rough on guitars.

I am also interested in these soundports. But as I know the way of thinking of my local luthiers who also build flamencoguitars.. I think they wont cut any holes in my carpio.. They also dont want to change the colour for me because they have too much respect to the builder ricardo s.c.... [&o] I think I need a ticket to the USA to let the job done by Jasons luthier. But thats a way too expensive I guess..

Its two very different things to make a hole in a guitar and to change the colour. The first is simple. Cut a hole. I will still strongly advice that some kind of reinforcement is put on the inside of the guitar. It is not a good idea to leave open endgrain without reinforcement and if it starts cracking it might do a LONG crack. There´s a reason the soundboard has rosette besides looking good and the soundboard has two croosgrain braces both above and underneath that reinforces. Its very simple though and can be done on a guitar which wasnt reinforced when built and it can be done to a guitar which has a non reinforced soundport as well. Just glue a couple of small flat pieces on both sides of the hole and you´ll be safe. Changing the color on a guitar is not so easy. You have to strip off the lacquer or shellack. and re lacquer or re polish it. You might end up with a bad surprice when the guitar comes back. It might sound and play a lot different than it does now. If a colored guitar is so important, my advice is to sell the one you have and find another.
