Ron.M -> Well... just placed my first order (Jun. 7 2004 20:08:40)

Just placed my first order for 10 sets of Savaerz 520 Bass Sets plus 10 extra D strings from www.stringsbymail.com
Pat's right, the guy Richard is a really nice fellow, who wrote back to say that he would be making my bill a lot cheaper, since he has a "special" on 10 off's on singles.
You should have a look on his Website.
Strings at just unbelievable prices for us in the UK.
I sent him back a confirmation email saying that it's pretty crazy that someone from the UK has to go to the States to buy strings made in France. LOL!
Even if they are intercepted by British Customs (In case it's a cleverly disguised package of wire garrottes sent to Al Quaida operatives in the UK), and they charge me VAT, I'll still be in pocket.
Still, we'll see how it goes....
There's no underestimating the British Establishment's method of making this country the most expensive to live in Europe.

cheers

Ron

That's nice, Ron. You're right, why spend extra money on guitars... but STRINGS, man strings now THAT can make a big difference in your playing. Get the right strings and you'll discover Paco's tone!

:)

Yeah Mike,
But guitars don't wear out as quickly as strings!
As for Paco's tone...I doubt if strings or guitars have much to do with that!

cheers

Ron

Ron,

Let us know how it works out on the shipping into the UK. His service is outstanding. I receive my order in about three days. A friend of mine in Hong Kong buys from him with no problems.

If all else fails, you can swim the English Canal!

Pat

English Canal!

It's the English Channel, Patrick. If was a canal, we might just have managed it without your help on June 6th, 1944 (bless their souls)[;)]

Pat,
His prices are great, and above all, there is nowhere I can find in the UK that offers Bass sets and individual strings at reasonable prices.
Just sets.
If you want individuals, they'll do them with a grudge and a cost to match.
The guy's site is great.
A veritable Alladin's cave of strings.
I mentioned that I'd been put on to his site by yourself via foroflamenco.
By the way Pat...We all know about things being bigger in the States, but give us a break.
You mean the "English Channel"
May look like a canal to you guys but it's a 20 mile wide seaway to us LOL!
Jeez, it's just been the weekend celebrating the heros of the D Day Landings over here.
I doubt if they'd be very happy about the fact that the Allies comandeered all the boats they could find to cross a Canal to confront the Nazi military superiority in Europe!
I was on a canal boat holiday in England a few years ago...canals are only about 40 foot wide!

LOL!

Ron

Simon,

"Channel" "Canal" it's all the same to us Yank's!

Ron,

They are 20 miles wide in Texas. Just ask El Zurdo.

Got to run. I need to get back to my "How to Spell the English Language" by Florian!

Patrick -> RE: Well... just placed my first order (Jun. 8 2004 0:31:36)

Ron & Simon,

I asked a fellow from Texas how much land he had? He said "Son, I have so much land, it takes me three days to drive from one end to the other". I told him "I had a car like that too"!

Escribano -> RE: Well... just placed my first order (Jun. 8 2004 18:39:42)

The old ones are the best[;)]

Ron.M -> RE: Well... just placed my first order (Jun. 8 2004 20:57:06)

We'll I was right LOL!

Buying single Savarez bass strings here in the UK costs approx £2.00 each.
(That's pounds sterling, not Euros)

My package of 40 strings cost me £60 from stringsbymail, including shipping.
That works out at £1.50 per string.....a good saving!

However, the Customs man intercepted it and charged approx £10.00 VAT.
That makes it now £1.75 per string....still not bad!

Then they applied a "Clearance Fee" of £13.50
Making it now £2.08 per string!

Clearance fee? What the hell is clearance fee?

I told you the British Establishment have ways of making you pay. LOL!

OK I'm still fairly happy that I had the choice of being able to order any quantity of any string with no hassle, but things only worked out OK because of the unusually high rate of exchange between the dollar and the pound. (roughly $1.8 = £1.00).
Once the exchange rate falls back to the more usual $1.4 = £1.00, then in won't be practical to order from them again.

A while ago I asked a friend to get me some Savarez when he was in Spain, but he reckoned they were about the same sort of price as here in the UK.
Luckily, he was going to the States the next month, so got me several sets at half the price.
What a state of affairs!

Ron
