Hey guys. Now I have a question.

Most of the metonomes I know have their max at 208bpm. Why 208? And why not more... Whenever I wanna pracvtice for example bulerias in normal tempo, my metronom is to slow to click every beat. I have to set it slower and use one click of the metronome for two beats of the compas.

Thanks for any answers!

Thats the way I was told to use a metronome playing bulerias in order to get the right grove.

Besides, 220 or 230 with a click on every beat is a bit stressy.

Yes a bit stressy.
But you can use weirdmetronome [ free download ] and set it to 666 if you want to.

Thanks for the link! Exactly what I looked for. Usually yes, its really stressing to hear every beat at higher tempo. But when the rythm changes often from 3,3,3,3, to 2,2,2,2 and 3,3,3 again during single falsetas, its easier to hear every beat and do the accents with the foot.
Because I didnt have such a fast metronome, I play all with marking every 2nd beat, no matter if the beat is on every 3rd hit or not. After a while u get familiar to that. Well.. but when learning new stuff, I would prefer to hear a hit on every beat, also at 230 and more bpm. I like the palmas on every beat like in all the old paco bulerias recordings.

But what about the theory? Why does a normal metronome stop at 208 bpm? Because the fastest classic speed is 208?

Metronome is just a beat reference. When you double time you SHOULD be able to "feel" the subdivision with a slower click. 200 bpm is more than enough. Any more than that and you are not "feeling" the stuff in between, the clicks are supporting YOU. My drummer friends in school said avoid the "potty training metronomes" ie, ones that do the subdivision FOR you , or accent, or go super fast etc. In the long run you will have better control over rhythm when you learn to "feel" and control the space between the clicks yourself.

Good luck!

I like potty training metronomes. I practice all the time with a quarter note between 240 and 270...... for bulerias that is. I don't have any problems "feeling" subdivisions of the beat wether they are below or above 200bpm. For those who don't don't know..... I am a drummer too. I started playing drums at the same time I started guitar. I had a killer jazz drummer who lived next door.

Of course it is great to have the skill to "double time" with the metronome set at lower settings, just as its great to be able to "swing" the metronome by mentally shifting so that you make the metronome clicks countertime (up beats)........ count downbeats starting in between metronome clicks and you will be making the metronome "swing".

Thanks for the answers!
During last night, I thought more about that and it came into my mind, that both, setting the metronome to lower tempo and feel the beat inbetween two beats of the metronome, or having a "high speed-metronome" and hear all beats, have its rights to exist.
But IMO they are only suitable for different kinds of ie bulerias. IMO if you set the metronome slower to every second beat of your buleria, you get a great "swing" thats right. But if you need a good fast "drive" and less "swing" than you have it easyer with hearing every beat also a t high tempo.
