I've noticed this in a couple of pieces in the Paco Pena book and the more I look at it, the more I realize what a great idea it is.

I also noticed a video on youtube called "movimientos de mano derecha" (or something like that). I had watched this video lesson a few times and hadn't noticed what he was doing. (I guess because there's no commentary)
Not only does he start on the upstroke, but he flicks the ras from his thumb. A very useful technique, but a bit hard to do at first.

I wanted to post a link to that video, but my computer is an old putz and I can't seem to make it work. I'm kind of an old putz as well, and perhaps that has more to do with it than anything. *_*

I don't really have a specific question about this, just wondering what some of you more experienced guys/gals think of it.

Check out the search on previous threads. there are lots of discussions on the various rasgueos. The thread " a 2008 challenge" has all of them (I think)
If you are talking about p,m,p rasgueos then they always start with an upstroke on the thumb. I tried to find a good example. Here is a video of a gypsy player using p,a,i,p,p rasgueo. You can see that individual groups start with a thumb upstroke. The final stroke is usually an upstroke with the thumb too.

I was thinking more of amii ras - but starting on the up-stroke .... so ....

iami and in the video he contiues with another upstroke at the end, so it becomes -

iamii (upstroke at the beginning and the end).

At first I thought he was just doing it as a free ras. but then I noticed right at the start he makes a point of locking his fingers behind the thumb right after the first upstroke. It will take me a bit of work to get it smooth.

I do a lot of those rasgueados when I play Bulerias Jerez style. If you do 3 in a row starting on 7 and ending on 10 you have a typical remate Jerez style.

I do other rasgueados where I end on i upstroke in other palos and I like the trebly sound of it.

depends on the sound you want, you can start or end, down or up. Up is brighter, down is darker. Locking into the thumb will produce a "snap" to the bass strings....sometimes you DON'T want that sound. So for me it just depends on the sound I am trying to make.

Thanks for the responses. Interesting, I am wondering now how a remate por bulerias would differ from region to region.

How does this compare with say : Moron, Granada, Sevilla or Madrid?

For fandangos and sevillanas I play iami starting with an upstroke - gives it a good galloping sound. Also the typical Moraíto aii rasgueados por bulerias - I think he usually ends with an upstroke, I start with an upstroke so I can end with a downstroke (iai) and accent the 10 better.
