I've just finished watching an excellent BBC programme looking at the social upheaval here in the UK in the 1960's.
Folk like Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart, Roger Daltry, Eric Clapton rose from their humble roots to being star attractions at the Queen's afternoon luncheon parties at Windsor.
The drummer with the 60's band Small Faces regulary has Prince Charles round to play polo at one of his six polo pitches in his country estate.
Even in my own experience, ex-public schoolboys were either trying to cover up their accent or apologizing for it saying "it's not my fault...mummy and daddy made me do it".
A true transition in culture indeed.
One bit that really grabbed me though was when Eric Clapton said, "I had a 42 bedroomed country mansion, several Rolls Royces, a chaffeur, a butler who served with white gloves, and all the Caviar I could take........ I thought I'd 'made it', but I looked out the window and I was still unsatisfied...."
Totally underscores my own philosophy that you live life in your head not outside it.
Flamenco seems to draw certain personalities that make money secondary to their "discovery", which seems to be fairly crazy in this money grabbing age.
Lots of very intelligent folk (and I don't mean to embarrass them here), like Estella, Kate & Harold, Rafael, ToddK, Richard Marlow, Fergusito, Florian, Mike Cho, Nick Williams etc have elected to live a very modest lifestyle in pursuit of something that gives them "inner satisfaction".
I, myself as a trained Electronics Design Engineer am getting close to the "minimum wage" level due to dropping out of "the system" and taking up "survivable self employment".
It's a bit like George Harrison said about dropping acid.
"Once you've done it, there's no going back...you can't dismiss it and get back to your ordinary life".
But I can see new and very talented recruits like Rob and Jon, who flirted with the stuff and have now become mainliners. LOL!
Strange stuff this Flamenco!
