Hey mates!

I was told to try to feel the bounce / swing of my bulerias by trying to tap my foot a la PdL like this:

I just practiced for about 1.5 hours, and I've started to be able to get my brain to separate my foot tap from what my right hand is playing. I assume that this issue falls under the heading of polyrhythm (correct me if I'm wrong).

Just thought I'd show you these two videos:

(nice lesson)

(show off!)

Enjoy! And please let me know what you think...

Hey Rombsix!

Thanks for posting the Steve Giordano clip. I used to be one of his fans back in the days; I had one of his albums, and I've seen him play live in duet with a vibraphone player in the early 80's in Philadelphia. How wonderful to see this kind person on the teachers stool!

As far as poly-rhythms are concerned I had always believed it to consist of a combination of two or more musical phrases played in different meters within the same stretch of time.

In my view your Paco foot example does not fall into this frame of analysis because it consists of a rhythm pattern well contained within the original basic meter of the buleria - I think.

Still, for me being quite a novice it's very hard to let it physically sink deep into the musical subconscious so as to be able to groove on it permanently, as in "auto-pilot" mode.

Again thanks for the links, G.

Here´s a good one to practize in order to improve compás feel. Remember that in falsetas its normmal to do tap like Paco in your clip no1 or doing 2 tap in order to push more. The last one is very good when playing Jerez style. Sometimes you even change foot tapping during a falseta.

At the same time do: (x is tapping)

foot:
x 1 x 3 x 5 x 7 x 9 x 11
palma:
x 1 2 x 4 5 6 x x 9 x 11
