Pimientito -> Name that movie- please help (Nov. 11 2008 1:51:39)

This is a bit of a strange request and truly belongs in the off topic section.
You know when you can see someones face in your mind and you just cannot remember their name, and it drives you kind of mad for a few days...well I need help naming a movie that came up in a discussion a while ago.
I'm pretty sure the movie is Spanish (but could be south american) and its really surreal, probably about 20 years old now.

The story is set in a circus where a women gets her arms cut off by a jealous husband/lover who is the owner. She has a son who kills the owner and can "become" her arms by standing behind her and gesticulating and doing jobs she needs doing. I think the son is blind or cant speak but I cant remember. There is also a scene where the circus elephant dies and they have a funeral. A giant coffin containing the elephant is dragged round town on the back of a lorry and edventually thrown off a cliff. The coffin cracks open and suddenly a bunch of naked people covered in white dust run out of the mud and carve up and eat the elephant.

I cant remember much more about it other than its one of the most surreal films I have seen. Has anyone else seen it? Can someone please tell me its name?

koella -> RE: Name that movie- please help (Nov. 11 2008 1:55:28)

I think you shouldn't smoke that stuff anymore.

[:D][:D][:D] ...says the Dutchman!

I swear its not a dream I had. I saw the movie an an arts theatre maybe 14 years ago and I met someone else who had seen it too...and neither of us could remember its name.

Oh good....I haven't seen this film, but reading the description I thought it seemed Mexican, and having seen 'El Topo' many years ago...[&:][>:][:'(][:-]

THANK YOU!!!
What a relief. I can sleep at night now. I was trying trying to remember El Topo as well but all I could think of was Topol which always led to "fiddler on the roof"

Here is the elephant funeral scene

Kate -> RE: Name that movie- please help (Nov. 11 2008 8:07:40)

LOL that's a relief. I was having dinner with Pimiento and a friend from London when she started talking about this strange movie. To her surprise Pimiento knew the movie and they both sat there racking their brains trying to remember its name. I can now let Coral know and put her out of her misery.

Pimientito -> RE: Name that movie- please help (Jan. 19 2009 23:52:20)

So hang on... which one is it??[&:]

Pimientito -> RE: Name that movie- please help (Jan. 20 2009 3:58:16)

The movie I saw was "Santa sangre" by Alejandro Jodorowsky.

I think Jacinto is making a clever joke...or he's got his directors mixed up.

Koella's response was:

Doesn't surprise me though that it should be Bergmann. I think that the reason I've never been able to watch one is 'cos I don't do drugs.

I'm leaving this thread. All this talk of elephants... disturbs me.

bursche -> RE: Name that movie- please help (Jan. 24 2009 11:52:27)

WTF

I just watched the scene where they destroy the "temple of the holy blood"

with this weird scene between the priest and the woman in the red cloth.
I don't get it. Is this a film about religious freedom or just some intellectual nonsense?

iEs pintura! (great) [:D][:D][:D]

Pimientito -> RE: Name that movie- please help (Jan. 25 2009 2:15:41)

I'll have to watch it again to recall what it was about. I seem to remember that is was just surreal. Mostly I was watching the next scene thinking "what the hell is going on now?"[:D].....I'd go for intellectual nonsense over any profound religious message.

...and its NOT Bergmann[;)]
