Any reviews/thoughts/info would be appreciated.

Florian -> RE: Manolo Franco `Guitarra Flamenca` (Nov. 4 2008 11:41:29)

looks pretty cool..would be good to have, expecialy if he has stuff on cante accomp on all this palos too, theres a hundreds of good instructional.techniques and falsetas dvds and books out there..it would be really something different if a guitarrist thought to cover different angles..such as cante acomp in detail..advanced rithms, llamadas, scales..dance accomp..

stuff that hasent been explored that much in instructional dvds/books there isnt that much on this topics out there, not togheder anyway..I know Oscar Herrero and a few others has some stuff like that but its only for about 3 Palos

Kate perhaps this might be a perfect Project for Emilio ? there arent many catering to those needs atm..not in detail..no question someone will think of it and do it soon because theres a demand...just wondering who will be the first one

have u ever discussed about doing something like this to Emilio ? a million falsetas books, a million how to do the techniques..a million beginner instructional books...hardly nothing covering the other topics in great detail that guitarists still need to know and learn..unless this series does that...

whos Manuel Salado ?

on one page it said Manolo Franco..u click on the video link and i see
Manuel Salado
"Guitarra Flamenca. Colección completa / complete collection (10 DVDs + CDs)"

I've seen him play a lot on Ondajerez TV.
He seems to be a pretty knowledgeable and respected Jerez guitarist.

cheers,

Munin -> RE: Manolo Franco `Guitarra Flamenca` (Nov. 4 2008 12:13:05)

According to a Franco interview I read somewhere, I think Salado is the producer who got the whole project into its gears.

I'm really interested in these DVDs too mainly because of the cante accompaniment stuff, but also because they cover palos that aren't often seen on instructional DVDs (Guajira, Garrotin). Any kinds of impressions would really be appreicated.

Edit: Here's the interview

quote:

LF: Let’s change a bit the direction of the interview and talk about your new instructional series of DVDs and CDs that you’ve put on the market with producer, Manuel Salado. I believe, at the moment, there are 10 volumes. How did this project come about?

MFB: Yes, at this moment there are 10 volumes.

LF: The collection was produced by Manuel Salado.

MFB: Correct.

LF: But all of the music is yours, composed by you and of course, and not only are there concert flamenco pieces but also lessons on how to accompany cante.

MFB: Exactly.

LF: Can you explain to us how this idea came about and how you were presented with the opportunity?

MFB: Yes. In reality, it wasn’t my idea but that of the producer, Manuel Salado. He saw the opportunity. In regards to my compositions, it’s an instructional video of my concert pieces. But, we also wanted to make an instructional video of accompanying cante. Each DVD and CD is dedicated to a different palo (flamenco style). So for each composition, there is a segment on how to accompany that palo. Everything is based on a pretty traditional form and somewhat easier for the less experienced or beginning guitarist. The concert pieces are more for advanced players. After, we wanted to make, for each palo, a segment on how to accompany cante with a more traditional approach, with sheet music, tempo slowed down, focusing individually on both the left and right hands. Also for me, on a personal level, it was my desire to record the things I had sitting around for the longest time, since “Aljibe”, that I wanted to record.

LF: So, in reality, it’s almost as if you recorded 10 albums!

MFB: I guess you could put it like that. I don’t like to record an album every year but I think it’s good to record something when you really have something to say. It was a while for me but I guess better later that never.

LF: Besides the music, I saw that it is very well adapted for the Non-Spanish guitarist. It’s in 6 languages. It’s very nice for the guitarist that does not speak Spanish.

MFB: Yes. It’s in Japanese, English, French, German and Chinese, aside from the Spanish. I think the sheet music is very important because there are always guitarists that are able to read music, especially classical guitarists. The falsetas are put to a metronome so that you can keep time while learning the falsetas, to keep you in compas.

mark indigo -> RE: Manolo Franco `Guitarra Flamenca` (Nov. 4 2008 12:13:53)

i thought manuel salado was some kind of producer or something, he produced the solo compas series, has a series of dance dvd's, and these guitar cd/dvd's, which are all manolo franco on guitar... maybe there's more than one manuel salado....

Florian -> RE: Manolo Franco `Guitarra Flamenca` (Nov. 4 2008 12:20:07)

ohh thats excellent

if hes the guy that produced Solo Compas its a good sign...solo compas series has been and is a guitarists that wants to learn to acompany dancers and learn about palos best friend for years...not to mention is great music....and the palmas tracks are priceless

when a dancer wants to dance a palo i never accompanied before first thing i put on is the solo compas cd to hear what the base and charactersitics of acomp that palo are..i still have every single 1st complete track for every palo in just one folder on my computer here for me to listen too whenever i feel like it cause its also just really good music

i am defenetly considerring geting it..

i also wanna hear some reviews

I have the solea por b series. It very good. The falsetas are good. I would say intermediate. There are 3 videos of each falseta: right hand, left hand, and "score view". Like in guitar pro, you hear the track and watch the notes simultanely. Very well done. Oh and on top of that there is a compas clock on each video showing the beats while playing. Only bad thing is there is now slow version. But i do it myself with amazing slow downer, i guess every guitarrist has that anyway, so its not really a problem ;-)

Florian -> RE: Manolo Franco `Guitarra Flamenca` (Nov. 4 2008 12:30:39)

but what about the other stuff ? exercises ?
what else does it cover about solea por buleria ?
cante acomp ?
rithm ?
what else is in there ? how does it compare with other instructional dvds/books ? beside the fact its going to be Manolo Franco falsetas...if u a manolo Franco fan and looking for new falsetas cool but..
personally atm i am more interested in Cante acomp, rithm structures etc..(uncovered stuff) then anyones signature falsetas or instructional how to do rasqueado or alzapua dvds...theres enough of that around atm theres only so many books/dvds/of generally the same advice given by dif guitarrists i wanna pay for...and theres not that many different ways of doing this techniques [:D] if u practice enough your rasqueado will sound the same weather u learned it from Oscar herrero or Granados dvd

so besides it beeing a different guitarrist with diff falsetas is there anything diff about this dvd that the others in the past havent covered ? or anything that makes it stand out ?

thanks alot Deniz...u are just what we needed ...way to come trough [;)]

Gummy -> RE: Manolo Franco `Guitarra Flamenca` (Nov. 4 2008 21:22:04)

I have 3 of them. Bulerias, SPB and Alegrias. They are pretty good DVDs. The player is Manolo Franco. Each DVD had a concert section where Manolo plays a song for us solo(with percussion and no cante). This is a more diffucult piece. In seperate sections he plays with cante(a kind of simplified version of his solo) and percussion, and with percussion only.

There is a falsetta section where you can choose right or left hand camera angles or the tab display for each falsetta. The biggest weakness with these disks is that there is no printed tab. I made screen grabs of my computer screen so I would not have to use the DVD to see tabs.

There are really no exercises or detailed explanations of the palos. There is a very short section that covers(by demonstration only) basic compas patterns for the palo and a few technique demos that are generic(like a picado scale). There is never an explanation of how to accompany, just a background to play to. It does not go into techniques of how to vary chords etc to follow the singer or describe the form of songs. It is less instructional and more just a collection of cool falsettas(on video) to play with a recorded background singer or rhythm.

A cool part is the audio cd that is included. You can listen to just the cante, just the percussion or just the guitar accompaniment. There are several long percussion sections recorded at several speeds to practice to.

THese are probably too technical for a beginner like me, but the compas loops and rhythm have helped even me get a better feel for the compas. It is also cool to have good flamenco guitar performances to watch.

The singer(female) is never shown on the DVD.

Rod

Florian -> RE: Manolo Franco `Guitarra Flamenca` (Nov. 4 2008 21:47:40)

Thank you very much for that Gummy

It still sounds kind of interesting..i like that u can listen to just the cante, just the percussion or just the guitar accompaniment. or that there are several long percussion sections recorded at several speeds to practice to...like Ritmo Flamenco

might be worth for me ordering one just to check that out

Pimientito -> RE: Manolo Franco `Guitarra Flamenca` (Nov. 4 2008 22:27:15)

They Have also re released his album Aljibe with a transcription book by Claude Worms. Aljibe was deleted ages ago....not even Manolo Franco had a copy to sell last year!

henrym3483 -> RE: Manolo Franco `Guitarra Flamenca` (Nov. 4 2008 23:43:52)

also after listening to some of the stuff on flamenco world i can see why his encuentro vid is'nt available anymore, the guajiras is the exact one on the video. ie duplication or he thinks its a better product.

Anders Eliasson -> RE: Manolo Franco `Guitarra Flamenca` (Nov. 5 2008 0:31:45)

I like what I see but I would like to see some of the cante things. I like the little compás metronome on the upper right corner.
I would buy if I had the time to study it. But since I follow a one year long course of playing with cante here in the Peña, I will stay with that.

Look at one thing: He´s playing a Negra with a cedar top. Thats a nice combination. I´ve made 3 cedar negras and I liked them a lot. Good choice if you want a good solo guitar or for playing with cante.

XXX -> RE: Manolo Franco `Guitarra Flamenca` (Nov. 5 2008 2:29:54)

hey flo, actually i was the opposite of a Manolo Franco fan. Whenever i saw him on youtube or on his encuentro video he was playing either a GUajira, COlombiana or Alegria or Garrotin. All those happy palos. I think the Cedar top gives a nice sound with these palos and it fits his playing. But i prefer more Bulerias or Solea por Bulerias and a spruce top, lol.

In my personal taste, I agree, and I prefer a Blanca, But, negras with cedar are pretty cool things also for the more "trashy" palos.
The cedar negras seperate very well and it suits Manolo Franco and others who play to many notes. [:D]
