Ailsa -> Emilio Maya's visit to London (Oct. 13 2008 6:01:02)

Hi guys,

Thought I'd just let you know how Emilio's visit to London went. I'd organised a course for him to teach (12 intermediate students, 9 advanced, plus some observers). He taught some great technique exercises, some pretty challenging tangos, bulerias, solea and a beautiful seguiriyas falseta, and the students all went home happy.

The most amazing bit for me was when he was teaching a structure for Seguiriyas and he sang while the students played. Emilio has a really nice voice. And on Saturday evening we saw a video from a previous visit to the London Pena, where he danced in the fin de fiesta - and he can dance as well! It's just not fair is it? [:D][:D][:D]

On the Sunday evening there was a Pena performance with Emilio, violinist Maya, a second guitarist Ramon Ruiz, and singer Javier Macias. Dancing was Juan Polvillo (from Malaga?), joined for the fin de fiesta by Anita la Maltesa. Needless to say it was sold out, with people standing all around the back and sides, and people turned away at the door. It was certainly the most successful Pena in the year and a bit that I've been involved.

However I'm now totally wiped out and have come to work for a rest [:D][:D]

Ailsa

Hey Ailsa, Well done!!
another success!

I had a great time. I thought Emilio was great, a real nice fella, smiling all the time and seemed to really enjoy teaching/playing with us!

Agreed! it took me a bit by surprise actually. I think I may have got a bit of it on film too. Beautiful stuff!

Did I hear someone say something about tabbing some of it.... or was that a dream? Sunday moved very quickly and I missed a couple of bits.

Ramon was my first teacher in London and then I took a couple of lessons with Emilio in Granada when I got to know him through Kate. Emilio and Ramon are buddies. Both good guys an highly recommended.

Hey Florian, Ailsa takes all the credit for organising this latest London gig and classes but yes would love to take the Emilio and his group to Australia.

It was a great weekend of teaching; very hard and some (/most?) well beyond my capabilities, but really inspiring - it's given me loads to work on.

Emilio's gig at the Pena was for me some of the best flamenco I've seen live - wish I could see him in a more relaxed venue. He has such great feeling when he plays.. I was even converted to liking flamenco violin!

I could go on and on but won't [:D]

Thanks Ails, and it was great to meet you Fergus!

Thank you for that acknowledgement Kate. [:)]

Actually Kate knows I was well fed up, because I worked my butt off all weekend and no-one asked how the guitar course went or said thank you [:@][:@][:@]

But like I said to her, I do it for the other students and for Emilio, so as long as they are happy I can forget the others [:D][:D]

Sad to say this is typical. When I organised the North America tour I was amazed that promoters stood on stage and claimed to have brought the group all the way from Spain ! ( Mostly they had refused to pay flights, hotels, transport or provide food). Almost every venue asked us to return again but then neglected to reply to further emails. All requests for the photos and videos taken were ignored. And every one knocked us down in price to the point we could barely buy breakfast. Later on I met one promoter from the US at Womex in Seville who proudly told me that his festival was so lucrative he could afford this trip and a few weeks in Portugal and bring his wife as well. Meanwhile said wife was kicking him under the table all too aware that he was putting his foot in it but I dont think he cared.

Why do we do it !! [&:][:)][:D]

Hey Florian. I've been busy having a kid. I have a son who is now 1 years old. Hence time out from foroflamenco but I'm doing as much as I can these days flamenco wise.
Hows things with you down under?
Ailsa really nice to meet you and thanks for working so hard to put on the worhops and concert the whole weekend was top notch.
