So I've just been brushing up on my tremolo,
and I decided to practice a bit of three stroke tremolo, ((just dropping first 1 stroke)) and I must say I find it kind of tough to switch to this after practicing my four stroke tremolo so much.

Is this technique used much? I don't recall hearing it in much modern playing?

(EDIT): I'm also looking at three stroke using Pimi, Piai, and Pmam.

I guess all these will help with my four stroke too! and general finger independence.

Any thoughts on this technique??

If you are referring to a quadruplet tremolo then I can't say I've heard this in Flamenco. If you are interested in pointers on the technique you should watch the Pumping Nylon video. There are a lot of interesting tips in it.

thanks man. yeah I've got that video/book but haven't looked at it for ages. I'll take another look. If its not used in flamenco at all, then I have no major wish to play it but if its useful for building strength, co-ordination and finger independence then I'm happy to practice it.

I just ask cos Gerardo opens his tremolo section on his dvd with these 3 stroke variations.

Actually I am sure I have heard some flamencos use it. Anyway, the technique is no different really than Pami arpegio, just that you have 3 of the notes all on the same string![;)] So if you work on your Pami arps, which timing wise are a little easier, then go into your tremolo, you will see some improvement.

If you don't remember Scott Tennant's tremolo demonstration and practice tips in Pumping Nylon I think you'll be surprised and impressed if you watch it again.

He mentions planting and removing each finger on the string during tremolo practice to make each note sound as loud and for the same duration. He also practices tremolo slowly and backwards--PIMA instead of PAMI, etc.
