I was going to post this under the "petty greivance" thread, but it got too chummy and not nearly irritated enough IMO.
What really gets me these days (amongs heaps of things [:D]) is the fact that you can't watch a documentary or scientific programme on TV these days without background music, computer animation and some idiot waving his arms about, begging you to take him to your heart and make him a celebrity.
When I was in the USA in the 70's, an American friend referred to TV as the "boob-tube", which totally cracked me up.
UK TV is now exactly the same way...even on the "serious" programmes.
Jeez...it's as if the producers have been brought up on Sesame Street and can't can't ever consider showing a factual programme without a sing-song and animation. No joke!

Probably in 5 or 10 years time, students at University will be getting pre-recorded lectures in the lecture-hall featuring the happy faces of Basil Brush or Sooty, to make them more "user friendly" and appropriate.

Oh Death...where is thy sting.....[:D][:D]

(Obviously I'm in a "Doit" mood ATM..[:D])

cheers,

Ron

Something I consider more disturbing than what you describe is the fact that several cable TV channels have changed their names and format to include a lot of programs that show video of car chases and other mishaps. Court TV used to focus on the law, live trials and debate among legal scholars. Now it has legal programming part of the day and car chases the rest of the time. It must be the only to keep their ratings high enough to stay in business.

Easy solution to this problem. Accept that TV is no good, read books if you want to learn and play your guitar more. [;)]

Well, they have to do SOMETHING to keep people off their computers all day, watching everything and ANYTHING they could ever want to see for free on YOUTUBE.

Don’t know how it is elsewhere at the moment, but today in Germany popular TV and music is a bunch of trash, all daytime talk-show niveau. Every season looking for the next top model or superstar who can best sing covers, teenie-group has-beens running around in the jungle doing disgusting things on a dare just to be on TV, and as if it weren’t bad enough that we get to hear something everyday about Britney, Paris, Lindsey Lohan and Co., now we get to read about Knut the polar bear, his new cage and his favorite food. And people watch it and discuss it in their freetime! It’s like people have nothing else in their lives but their job and what’s on TV no matter what it is. And they tried to copy “Cops” but hardly anything bad ever happens here, so it’s just like two cops asking and old man to get off a private lawn or writing a woman a ticket because she didn’t clean up her dog’s poop.

I’d love to see a show against all this crap. Something fun. Spoofs and interviews making fun of these idiots. Even if it were just some clown throwing pies or live rodents at them for example, something like that – just as trashy, really – still I’d watch it!

Exactly!!

I dont watch TV anymore since several years now.
Not only because of the trash which you mentioned, but also even the news and political discussions.

I google for the news on some independent websites (not this mainstream shiit which you see on TV or popular magazines like "Spiegel"[:D] for pseudo-intellectuals[:D]) ...and i sometimes watch documentaries on google video or youtube, etc......(stage6 had perfect quality videos but unfortunately its down now due to high costs for the servers)

p.s. John, the only german TV channel that i watch sometimes is "ARTE".....
They have good documentaries sometimes and even flamenco related programs[:)]

Jejejeje.
Youve obviously never had to endure Spanish daytime TV. It is staggeringly poor.
I used to moan about British TV having too many repeats but now I realise why it is the envy of the world and well worth the licence fee. (We Brits have to pay 160 euros or so every year to watch TV?
If you are sick in bed and need any motivation to get better and go outside, just watch TV in Spain. After 3 hours of big brother in the evening the day continues with a 4 hour talk show discussing all the ins and outs of who likes who, endless repeat clips of people holding hands....then everyone gets a polygraph test to see if they really did sleep with someone or not...dispursed by two 15 minute commercial breaks every hour.
The afternoon continues with "aqui hay tomate" a 3 hour show following "b"celebrities around shops and night clubs and seeing if any 2 stars are wearing the same shoes.
If that seems dull you can change channel and watch several columbian soap operas, each more implausable than the next (although the women look amazing) , or an in depth documentary on manchego cheese. The news only shows car crashes and freak weather. Evening movies are again interupted by endless commercial breaks (at least 25 minutes per hour).... now I only watch DVDs.

Talking of spanish TV what about the program that shows you every minute of action from the coffee machines view????

But

This morning on the BBC in the UK the April fools joke cracked me up[:D].

That's it exactly John,
That's the kind of population every Government dreams of.
Work hard, recupirate in the evening with a couple of drinks and some tranquilliser TV, go to bed, get up in the morning and go to work again.
Spend the money you earn after paying Tax buying the latest gadgets and gizmos to keep the Economy moving along, then eventually die without causing too much cost burdon on the NHS.
Combine that with the UK's Government plan of pressing for everyone to be on a DNA Database, carry fully Biometric ID Cards and have CCTV cameras on every street corner and office and shop and Car Plate number recognition systems on every road, so the Police can solve every crime without having to get up off their backsides and just drink coffee by their computer station...and there it is... the Perfect Society!

Eventually replace the Government with a Super Computer...and there you have it![:D][:D]

cheers,

Ron
