henrym3483 -> tomatito's new album "interview acoustic guitar" (Mar. 26 2008 19:40:13)

i was at my mates house today who plays acoustic and was browsing through his acoustic guitar stack of magazines and i came across two flamenco guitar interviews in the mag.

one was from the man whose name must not be said on the forum (ie it starts with a J and ends with an M) but the other interview was with tomate and he talked about his new album due out late 2008 which will be very cante orientated, ie he wants to go back to accompanying more and also the palos hes hoping to cover ie por solea, siguiriyas, tientos all the cante jondo styles mentioned working with potito, diego el cigala etc for this album.

i was really blown away, i cant wait to hear the final production. ive never heard tomatito play por siguiriyas before so it should be interesting.

Congratulations Henry. I noticed your status has just changed to fellow. I’m sure you’ve experienced a noticeable improvement in your playing since yesterday when you were a lowly aficionado and no doubt your parents are very proud of you!

That's interesting. Potito said last year that he was retiring from flamenco (in August) as a result of a religious experience, and would from then on devote himself to "saving souls".
Anyway, good news about the album - thanks for the tip, Henry old Fellow!

god i hope that isnt true, he's prob one of the best voices ive heard.it'd be a shame to was literally such god given talent.

I hope the new album will include La Tana. Her voice was amazing in concert with Tomatito last month. (She's the one who sings on Paco de Lucia's Cositas Buenas).

I also love Tomatito and hope that this new project comes off in the near future!!![:)][:)][:)]

I believe the invisible guitarist in this clip is Tomatito.

He also noodles a bit por siguiriyas in the Camaron Paris DVD. The way it's edited he seems to drift into it from bulerias until Camaron gives him a sharp look.

im must pick that dvd up some time, though one of my friends said its kinda like an interview documentary rather than just a live show.

btw thanks for the siguiriyas vid, ive only ever heard camaron sing it on cds.tomate as far as im aware has'nt recorded a siguiriyas solo yet. it'd be cool to hear a modern interpretation of it. gerardos remache is proably one of the best non trad solos ive heard of the palo.

I have the CD but not the DVD - do you know which track it's on/around when?

I found the interview with Potito where he announced his retirement, it was in the July/August edition of the magazine Alma100. Here are a few quotes for Potito fans and anyone interested in the 'sociology' of flamenco. [8|]

This was when he left Tomatito's group, and when asked about that he replied "I'm going to do things on my own although I'll still do a few little things with him because, you see, I have to tell you something: in August I'm retiring from flamenco".
Naturally this is a surprise to the interviewer, so Potito explains:

"God has touched me and instead of recording for the world, for the flamenco thing, I'll record for Jesus Christ because he has changed my life in every sense. I was a lost man and Christ saved my life."
He mentions the flamenco lifestyle, staying up all night, how - unlike in the old days - there's a lot of competitiveness, and now "it's all lies, drugs and alcohol". He says that he had a lot of problems but now God has taken them away.

"You'll still be hearing me, but instead of people getting drunk and drugged with my bulerias and my songs, because I've used my letras to encourage people to do bad things, now I'm going to save souls..."

This may be the zealotry of the recent convert, and perhaps with time the pendulum will swing back to the middle. Anyway, you can be sure that whatever he records with Tomate will not cause you to indulge in any naughty behaviour.

Apparently Evangelical Christianity is becoming quite a big thing in some gitano communities. It's mentioned in the chapter on flamenco in Giles Tremlett's excellent book "Ghosts of Spain", and I read elsewhere that the Cañoroto people are into it.

Well, I don't want to pass judgement on others. Apparently he needed this for reasons that are his own. At least he is still singing......[8|]

Oh, dear God! show yourself to me! [&:]

On an unrelated matter, has anyone ever heard of the American televangelist Kreflo A. Dollar? His name always cracks me up.

What's the matter? Flamenco lifestyle getting you down?
We could discuss it over a bottle of whisky and some canutos, if you like...[:D]

Never heard of "Kreflo A. Dollar", that's brilliant!

Conrad -> RE: tomatito's new album "interview acoustic guitar" (Apr. 2 2008 23:12:55)

Hehe, DEAL!... Nah, it's my ambiguous way of saying how this invisible God person has caused so much suffering and goodness all in the same go... and I feel a little left behind. [:D]

I spelled it wrong, it's Creflo, but ya, it's his real name!!! Coincidentally, he's one of those "prosperity" preachers.

Anyway, I worship the sun, like George Carlin. It seems to be working out for me...
