This goes out to all, but Tom (La Falseta), have you - or anyone - ever seen or studied a Barba, measured, etc.? I ask Tom, because he builds and has had a few in his hands...Wondered if you've ever looked or taken notes.

I've played a few, never studied, but love the sound they produce....Wouldn't mind building a model...

Thanks

I have the plantilla for an 03' Barba which has pretty much been the same for all the current ones I've seen. Big body. Particularly, the overall length. I didn't have it very long as I shipped it to it's new owner pretty much after I received it so I didn't get a chance to take measurements. I just got a good peek inside.

I had a 1965 Barba which had a smaller body and different bracing pattern so he has made some changes through the years.

Hola Tom

I am told that Barba had a fire in his taller and lost everything. The taller was the front room of his house, so sounds serious.

Sean

Hola Sean,

Errol(flamencoguru) told me the same thing. He heard this from a friend of his in Spain. If this is true, it would be the 2nd time that I know of, that Barba has had a fire in his shop. I believe he had one some time around 2001 or so.

I just spoke to a friend of mine who is good friends with Barba. He did in fact have a fire but in one room. Unfortunately, it was the room where he kept his wood stock and tools!

He also told me that he didn't have a fire before. When he temporarily closed his shop a while back, it was for remodeling.

Hey Tom,

Sad to hear about Barba's stuff. I'll send Ethan Margolis an E. He lives down the street from the shop....

Have you looked at the Reyes plans ever? Would you say the Barba is larger than this? Luthier Robert Hein uses the Barbero plan for flamencos, and my Reyes is considerably larger.... Just wondering if the Barba was even larger!

TANúñez -> RE: Barba plans? (Mar. 27 2008 23:36:14)

Hey Ramon,

It's longer than the Reyes but almost the same in the upper and lower bouts as well as the width of the waist. Reyes is pretty short compared to most guitars I've compared it too. If I'm not mistaken, the Reyes from the 12th to the end of the body is 487mm give or take, and Barba, 495mm. Most guitars I see are around 490mm.

Hmmmm...dats be interestinssssss....... If you ever run across another, you interested in studying it and making a plantilla?

TANúñez -> RE: Barba plans? (Mar. 29 2008 0:42:52)

Always interested!

Hi Ramón

It's about two years ago that i came across a Barba Flamenca blanca here in Switzerland. As it was the first top level Flamenco guitar that i came across "en vivo" i asked the owner to take measures of that guitar. Fortunately he agreed after a while convincing him that i don't going to spoil his guitar, nor will i try to copy the guitar 1 by 1. The guitar sounded quite well but different to the ones i've heard in Sevilla. The soundboard seemed to be too thin. It warped somewhat due to the string torque. The cypress was of excellent quality.

I have tried to build one, but unfortunately it was not a sucess, as i did two mistakes during the construction. The guitar turned out with too high string action, too much sustain and with a bad sound in some positions.
Nevertheless i'm still convinced that the Barba design is of first quality, but you must understand the details of this system, otherwise it will just look similar to a Barba but it wont sound alike.
For the moment i have changed my path of flamenco guitar making to another design but eventually i might come back to it in the future.

I think there's no plan or blueprint of a Barba guitar availlable anywhere. As it is very difficult to come across first class flamenco instruments and even more difficult to take measurments of them, i don't going to give it away unless you can offer me a blueprint of a Conde Hermanos AF 25 and we could do kind of an interchange deal.

I've never even seen a C25. Tom...What model Conde did you build a copy of??

An A26 or 'Media Luna'. Same as the AF 25 only the 26 is a blanca. I know some guys here who have Barba's. I'll see if I can track them down and perhaps get some measurements for you. Just be patient as it may take me a while. I'm nice. I will share with you as there are no secrets in guitar building. Every maker has taken something from another at some time or another.
