Just caught it on BBC4 tonight - and it blew me away. Actually, it had me in tears in parts [sniff].

Great film Simon, that studio would have been a very VERY special place to be. I really like that all that mattered to them was is someone could play, no preconceptions based on cultural or racial background. They used their ears not their eyes.

Listening to a modern studio recording and then listening to Motown, well there is no comparison. Will it ever happen again?

Tamla is one of my All-Time favouites without a doubt.
There has never been anything like it IMO.

There was a program on Radio 4 a couple of weeks back looking at Tamla and American black singers arguing who came from the "Gospel" heritage and who came from the "Rock and Roll" heritage.
And who was TRULY tamla.
Very much like the arguments in Flamenco IMO.

I just love those numbers and the girls singing 4 part harmony in their beehive hairdos and sticky-out skirts.

Ahh...to be young again and Top Of The Pops! [:D]

ah Simon this is a great documenatry. I bought it after we had seen them playing Detroit at hte World Music Festival. We were there on tour with the flamenco kids I worked with Taller de Compás who had played as support so we were all back stage. They invited the kids on stage to sing but to everyone's astonishment they did not know the words. Still they named us "Honoury funk Brothers". After the gig some of them hitched a ride with us back to the hotel in our tour bus. We talked of Bootsy Collins and other funk greats they knew. Amazing people, fantastic band, wonderful memories, brilliant documentary.
