Almoraima oud (Full Version)

Anybody know what kind of oud is/was used in PDL's Almoraima bulerias? Specifically, is it
(1) the melon-back "potato-bug" fretless type with violin-style pegs (parallel to the plantilla) like this:

(2) the fretted "flamenco" type oud with a flat back and pegs perpendicular to the plantilla like a pegged guitar. Like this:

Both have 5 double courses of strings (in the ones I've seen).

I would imagine type 2 (above) is easier to play, but I've never heard one. I have a type 1 and don't much like the sound -- deader than most guitars.

Ouds are not easy to keep tuned. Mine is so lighty built that as you tenion up the strings to get them in tune the wood compresses and the other strings go flat. You end up going round the tuning sequence several times. You can actualy see the face distorting slightly around the bridge, which is worrying the first time you do it. Then of course you have to play fretless as well....
So you can see why the guitar gts more use than the oud

I think it is the usual arabic oud..you can tell from its sound the other one( the smal freted) I did not hear before but sould have different sound.

if the oud is good and the player is good it will not be out of tune at...all I think you did not hear Munir Bashir he playes duet with his son...2 ouds so how it could be out of tune!

No disrespect. It was tongue in cheek. What I meant was a guitar player, Paco, very used to his frets, tries to play his melodies on a fretless and ends up sounding a little out of tune. Point being the sound of the instrument without frets is obvious.
