Francisco -> RE: What's your favorite CD right now? (Feb. 5 2008 12:29:12)

I went to my usual website to order Santiago Lara's CD and its' cost is $29, and that does not include shipping. That seems kind of steep to me. I checked iTunes, but it's not listed. Where does everyone from the states order their flamenco CDs?

You didn't go over the top. Florian is Romanian. He will stab you if you do not prove yourself. [sm=lol.gif]

Grayman444 -> RE: What's your favorite CD right now? (Feb. 6 2008 10:19:14)

Raphael Riqueni - Mi Tiempo

In my opinion one of the most original artists around

Good one srshea, that's more like with what I have been listening to lately. I tend to like more of the traditional stuff. Too bad we haven't heard from the likes of T. Whitley or Ron on this subject as I get the impression that they like the traditional stuff too.

You will be blown away. He came on the scene at 16 (most of the pieces on the album are from then too) and afterwards was discovered by Manolo Sanlúcar. Beautiful compositions. I've been hooked on the album for weeks now.

Well Pim you obviously just don't pay attention to Florian's posts, cos Flo recommended this CD months ago and I got it from flamenco-world AGES ago. So I'm the smartie pants here.

So why aren't you paying more attention to the Foro? I mean have you got, like, a LIFE or something? [:D][:D][:D][:D]

Seriously I want to get something by Rafael Riqueni as I've heard some people whose opinion I respect say how good he is. Grayman444 is listening to Mi Tiempo - any other recommendations?

Btw I see that's your first post Grayman - welcome to the Foro![:)]

[:D][:D] you know, when i get the notification e-mails that don't say what's a quotation, and don't have the smileys, it's really tough to tell when someone's actually being angry!!

Adam -> RE: What's your favorite CD right now? (Feb. 6 2008 21:11:13)

Also, as I sit here at 5 in the morning doing my astro problem set, sipping some sherry (well, it's gone now! [;)]) and listening to Santiago Lara, I felt compelled to mention here how brilliant the tremolo in the rondeña is...and the one in the taranta is very nice too...towards the beginning of the tremolo there's one moment (around 0:50) where he builds up the suspense and handles it so beautifully...it caught me off guard!

Where are the cante lovers?

right here [:)] i only listen to guitar when i am looking to steal ideas, i normally only listen to cante.
When i put on a guitar cd i am scanning when its a cante one i am just enjoying it no guitar solo has ever made me feel the way good cante makes me feel.

I got a cante album and Antonio Rey album at the same time, i have listened to the cante one about 30 times the Rey one just once...it takes me a while get into new guitar album, and theres alot to digest in this one but i am sure i will love it soon afterall he studied with David Cerreduela and even ramon jimenez cd took me about 20 listens before i loved it.

Yeah and here! Only reason I didn't put my favourites up is that most of the stuff I listen to is really old - borrowed loads of old cante on vinyl, and a lot of it is not available on CD. Some albums by Fernanda de Utrera, Nina de los Peines, Calixto Sanchez etc. It's brilliant stuff, and I love the quality of these old recordings - it's not smooth, jazz-lounge stuff, but when you listen it's almost like you are really there.

Anders Eliasson -> RE: What's your favorite CD right now? (Feb. 6 2008 22:53:56)

I´m a cante lover as well and I hardly ever listen to solo guitar cd´s. I wrote Rod Stewart..... Wonderfull flamenco voice.

My favorite right now, Camaron con la colaboracion especial de PDL.

Here too! Get Esperanza Fernandez' new album, it's great!

Pimientito -> RE: What's your favorite CD right now? (Feb. 6 2008 23:10:24)

Thanks for the link Mr.TANuñez....and to everyone who recommended that. What a great player. I am going to find that CD later and I had better get the new Chicuelo while I am at it since everyone is talking about that too. Im just surprised that he hasnt been mentioned more often up till now. However there seem to be so many new kids on the block, Antonio Rey, Rafael Cortes, Juan Carlos Romero etc. its hard to keep up.

Rafael Riqueni... Mi Tiempo - any other recommendations?

You got it in one Ailsa, no time for my ciber friends this week..I have actually been sitting with the guitar more recently. Mi tiempo is a good album but uses quite a lot of string instruments...its almost like Flamenco quartet. My favourate is still "Juego de Niños" which is ironically named since the compositions are anything but childs play! The first album "flamenco" is also great but hard to find. He also did "alcazar de crystal" and an album of works by old masters (sabicas, niño ricardo etc.) called "maestros".

xirdneH_imiJ -> RE: What's your favorite CD right now? (Feb. 7 2008 2:36:32)

i've been listening to Camarón's cante cd's recently...i got and listened to Esperanza Fernández's new album, but didn't like it, i'll probably have to listen to it many more times...
to the topic of rondenas and Santi Lara, i didn't really like his album, although the rondena is good...but the most complete rondena i've heard lately was the one by Juan Diego on Luminaria...

Thomas -> RE: What's your favorite CD right now? (Feb. 7 2008 5:48:29)

Dhafer Youssef: Digital Prophecy
Bill Frisell : Floratone
Jason Vieaux: Images of Metheny
Paul Galbraith: In every lake the moon shines full
Josemi Carmona & Benavent: Sumando

"Flamenco"
His first and best work in my opinion though the others aren't far behind. He was a prolific artist until he had his issues.

Some of the best bulerias, solea, etc. ever.

I find it curious that most of the recommended CDs, not just in this post but in general, are solo guitar.
Where are the cante lovers?

La Kaita is a perennial fav.
El Vareta is amazing.
Few recordings but Juan Jose Amador.
Jose Anillo.

Ines Bacan gets criticized for intonation but she sings some of the most interesting bulerias melodies IMO.

As for cante, I'm still getting into Antonio Pitingo's cd 'Antonio Pitingo con Habicuelas'. There is something about this guy's cante that is different. It's refreshing.

Arash -> RE: What's your favorite CD right now? (Feb. 7 2008 10:44:09)

Flo,

I am exactly the opposite..[:D]

I prefer Solo Guitar CDs.
And i only here to Cante Albums if there are also some good guitar parts in them..[:D]

I dont like Cante Albums where only some chords are accompanied the whole time. No chance.

Ok there are some few exceptions like some tracks from Jose Merce or Guadiana or the last Esperanza Fernandez Album.

But focus is always on guitar[:)]

Ricardo -> RE: What's your favorite CD right now? (Feb. 7 2008 14:08:43)

Duquende's latest live in Paris was very good. Just him and Chicuelo and a cajon very low in the mix. Mainly it just sounds like good ol cante and guitar. And as for guitar, even if you are a big Chicuelo fan, you will probably prefer THIS for just Chicuelo vs his latest Solo album mentioned. I mean the guitar is very good on this live album, and his solo stuff did not have alot for me.

Having said all that, the Duquende CD, Loved it for a week or so, but it made me want to go back and listen to more camaron again, so it is not like a huge favorite. Like Conrad, i am really into videos of singers, like Youtube or the Rito series. My favorite in Rito lately is Platero de Alcala.

Ricardo

True,...but when he started singing yesterday ect , he lost all magic for me. And that's a shame cause he has plenty of magic. And every time I hear his (beautifull intriging, what ever you want ) voice, I remember the dissapointment I felt when he started to sing Yesterday on the show. I felt like crying. He opened with a seguiriya...I was blown away and then all of a sudden smack boom....Yesterday. Of course I respect him as an artist but for me personnaly it doesn't work any more.

... You guys probably think; "get over it" [:)]
