srshea -> I Should Have Known When I Didn't See A Chair (Jan. 27 2008 16:17:42)

I live in a pretty small city that’s not exactly a flamenco hotbed. Earlier this afternoon I was at our town’s annual “ethnic celebration”, and saw that the closing performance was going to be by a group called Oly Flamenco. So, with my heart filled with equal parts skepticism and hope I later went back down the festival to check it out. I wasn’t actually even expecting anything all that good, but was at the very least hoping that the guitar player would be halfway decent and might be someone to possibly take some lessons with.

The first sign that something was horribly wrong was the empty, chair-free stage. At this point I should have taken the hint and left , but instead I stayed, desperately deceiving myself in thinking that, well, I guess the guitar player is going to carry his chair out on stage with him when it’s time to play. Which of
course didn’t happen. What did happen is that a lone woman came out and told us that she has studied under a teacher who has gone to Spain and “danced with the gypsies”, at which point the audience oohed and aahed. Then she taught us how to do palmas, getting the whole audience to clumsily pound their mitts together to a rough tangos beat. At this point I was pretty bummed, but decided to be a good sport and stick it out, hoping that there might be something I could take away from the experience. Then she showed us how to clap a bulerias rhythm, and actually fell out of compas after two cycles (oops!). In the end she may have been a decent dancer , but I wouldn’t know; as soon as she called out to the sound guy “Alright, cue the sevillanas!” I got up and left.

I hope everyone else’s Saturday night was better than mine

my favourites lol, council spossored ,a litlle condosending like " - Cmon guys, lets see what they have, lets try to understand them, this is the minorities day [:)]"

I wonder if they have ethnic celebrations in Africa and they have a bunch of white people runing around in Cowboy outfits singing western music and yoodeling, (sorry in romania as a kid all our cowboy movies were german and italian, i was very confused as a litlle kid.[:D] all the indians spoke german/ italian and could yodle.)

about my day ...
i twisted my ankle (its acctualy sunday morning here), was practicing in front of the pc. ( in the living room) my mom decided to visit (she has a key), i didnt expect her, i didnt hear her walk up.. all i heard was out of nowhere and verry sudden noise on my front door, i jumped up, but my leg was alseep so as my jumping up was more like jumping down cause as soon as i put weight on it, it twisted backwoods and i felled under the desk but not before i dragged everything on my desk on top of me, glass of icecoffe, astray, etc..., now its swollen ....pretty nerdy[8|]

people dont realize what a dangerous bussines we are in [:D]

Florian -> RE: I Should Have Known When I Didn't See A Chair (Jan. 28 2008 0:23:28)

lol, i gues both would have been funny

but mine its starting to move away from funny now, its been 10 hours and my foot is absolute killing me, lucky its a public holiday here tomarow and i dont have to work, its not broken i dont think but it hurts as if it is..

but enough about me , how are you guys ? [:D]
ok thats enough, back to me..
the only think that is getting me trough is the New Alicia Gil cd, you guys have to get this, the best new voice in flamenco for women since Montse imo and the guitar accomp is great too, really pure voice, you have to have it !! Its my new fav cante cd, her voice has a perfect quality and i cant place my finger on it why, but i cant stop listening to her.

And shes my friend on myspace and said hello the other day !!![8D] (dont let me catch any of you trying to steal her from me [:@] )
and so did the lady from Martirio de Compas, she was asking me about the Diego del Gastor falseta, was telling me about her son, the guy from Son de La Frontera it was really cool...you know (Flo's face expression changes to serious) shes related to Diego del Gastor .

sorry getting sidtracked but i didnt wanna start a thread just for myspace famous people encounters but i do get excited like a litlle kid and i waitied about 3 days to sneak it into a conversation (because of my modest nature[:)]) but noone gave me a opening or anything to work with... so now it just came out [:D] but it is pretty crazy to think i am standing in my living room in my pijamas chatting to famous people lol.

Francisco -> RE: I Should Have Known When I Didn't See A Chair (Jan. 28 2008 1:27:27)

My Saturday was turning out to be a great day. It was boy's night out, and we all decided to have poker night. We all bring some food (usually our own specialty - mine happens to be barbecue ribs & coconut shrimp) and drink. It really over the years has turned into a night that we all look forward to for the company the excellent food, and poker. The festivities usually start around 7pm, and are usually over about 1am. All was going great, until about 12:30am when someone brought up politics and their favorite choice for the upcoming 2008 election. That wasn't a big deal since one's opinion of who is the best candidate really is all conjecture until they're elected and you see whether all they live up to all their talk.

This was no big deal really, but then the discussion went on to September 11. This is where the discussion got pretty heated. I don't want to get into the details because I don't want to restart the whole debate here, but my stance is basically that I'm not convinced the official explanation is any where near the truth. Needless to say, the party went to $hit, and several people went away from the party with negative feelings, including myself. Anyway, my blood is still kind of boiling over some of the things that were said.

I just need to learn how to keep my mouth shut, i think.

Where do I start? Seriously tho, given a choice between discussing all those issues again or having tooth picks shoved under my finger nails, I would have to probably have to go for the latter at this point.

If you're truly interested tho, maybe we could pm or start another thread.

Simple. Stop sitting like that. Try the other positions and see which is more comfortable. Evenually you'll get used to sitting like this.

Tinbender -> RE: I Should Have Known When I Didn't See A Chair (Jan. 28 2008 4:46:29)

I know what that is like. I live in Oklahoma and this is not a cultural place at all. Ruben Romero used to come and play with a guy here that is a classical guitarist named Edgar Cruz and they would have a couple of dancers from a local studio. I liked Romero a lot. He was the first person I had seen playing Flamenco although with his originals he leaned towards Rumba but he has passed on.

I have even went to Dallas to see David Quintana and his wife and that was fun and he is a super nice guy. I understand there is more Flamenco in Dallas but I rarely have time to do much if I am there.

And my 1 second of fame is a group called Los Ninos de Espana y Mexico. I found them online hoping they had a guitarist that could teach me and instead I ended up playing with them for a while. I couldn't hardly play when I met them but now I am pretty decent (good enough for the metal heads and folk people at Guitar Center to stare at me). But the teacher never had time to work with me on music and her dances, so they perform with a CD still. There actually is a clip of me playing for them on their site for Telemundo OKC. They filmed mostly beginners. So I play just for enjoyment and hope someday Paco will go to Fort Worth or Dallas.

I think you mean Martirio, the singer/actress who always wears dark glasses, mother to Raul of Son de la Frontera. Son de la Frontera includes two of Gastor's descendants: guitarrist Paco De Amparo and dancer Pepe Torres (both grand-nephews ) but I didn't think Raul and Martirio were related to him. In an interview with Estela Raul talks about how he didn't discover Diego del Gastor's music till he moved to Madrid, in fact at the time he thought Diego del Gastor and Diego del Moron were one and the same. Cool to chat on myspace though. It's a great place for musicians to connect. Jaime Heredía just got a gig in France through his page and Emilio has connected up with this great aud player who's coming all the way from Canada to record with him.

I think you may be confusing Martirio and Martires de Compás, a flamenkito rock group. I bet they have a myspace page. Great band live.

Kate

Florian -> RE: I Should Have Known When I Didn't See A Chair (Jan. 28 2008 6:05:36)

What a lovely message to get she says " Hi Florian, I was really surprised to hear the music of Diego Del Gastor on your webage. Do you know of my son Raul Roderiguez, or his group Son de la Frontera? Go to their page, they make versions of Diego and some of the group are direct descendants of him. Kisses and hope you are well. Olé flamenco throughout the world! Martirio "

I've seen Son de la Frontera many times now and got to hang out with them a bit in Jerez as I was with Estela who has known them since they were kids in the village. Nice guys ! Martirio was also on the García Lorca homage ' De Granada a la Luna' which Harold mastered. She's very famous here in Spain. Hey by the time you make it over here you're going to know everyone [;)]

"I think I was mistaken and something happened but listening to your music it didn't seem like I said about Diego del Gastor. Anyway whatever look at the webpage, you're going to like it. And your music is truly beautiful. Kisses. Martirio."

Not quite sure what she is saying here without the context seems like she thought you were like Diego and then didn't, something made her think about Diego though but anyway she sure likes your music.

Hmmmm kisses from Martirio [;)] Lucky boy.
Kate

Ron.M -> RE: I Should Have Known When I Didn't See A Chair (Jan. 28 2008 8:35:16)

I saw the word "aparece"
