Hi,
If you were to say to someone, check out this guy Sabicas.
Which albums would you direct them to, to get the best appreciation of his work?

Stu

I think on the "Queen of the Gypsies" album, he was really on the top of his game.

( BTW Carmen Amaya is the "Queen", not Sabicas..[:D])

cheers,

Ron

For me it has to Flamenco Puro - THE classic Sabicas album (and to my knowledge the only one of his albums lovingly restored and remastered...)

This one really is a treat. From the first bars of Brince Gitano his unmistakable tone just gives you a huge smack in the mouth...

...In the nicest possible way!

Enjoy!

Affedis (Alain Fucher) also has a good book with CD called Sabicas 'Rey del Flamenco' if you want to try playing some of his compositions.

I would also say Nueva York / Granada which was recorded with Morente.
Its' not got the fireworks of the other suggestions, but it is a very human recording.
Not many at all exist like this in any musical genre.

There are a quite a few great Sabicas albums. Flamenco Puro is a must have.

I too really like the album he did with Enrique Morente. It was actually the last album he ever recorded. The playing is not as virtuosic as before but the "aire" is completely there. What a great album!!

Un saludo, Errol

The thing I really love about Sabicas is the non-confrontational way he approaches his playing.
Whether he's in a little Bar or the Carnegie Hall, he just plays the same way!

I've heard his records, watched his videos and even seen him play live in Madrid.
He's never nervous or anything...he just holds the guitar like a big cuddly teddy bear and those big fat fingers start to play the greatest lyrical sounds... and he just smiles and looks relaxed and doesn't even start to break a sweat....like he's back in his comfort zone

Sabicas is certainly unique.

cheers,

Ron

I've got the Grandes Figures du Flamenco disc. It has a number of tracks from Flamenco Puro and a bunch of other stuff. A good over-all sampling.
