Hi Tom,
I do not know of any Portuguese guitar builders, but here is a web site with some interesting Portuguese guitar information.

Hi Tom
I do know one guy, not a professional but very enthusiastic........ LUIS MOTTA DA SILVA.
He attended a guitar making course in Spain last year which I was helping to teach.
I can put you in touch if you wish?

12 string guitars always look like such fun to tune [&:]

Ailsa -> RE: Guitarra Portuguesa (Dec. 18 2007 23:18:36)

just found this site through wikipedia, which also lists a couple of different ways of tuning

http://www.guitarraportuguesa.com/

It's in portuguese, but not too hard to get roughly what it's saying, and has some good pics.

Anyone have a sound file? Would love to hear how it sounds.

EDIT: Answered my own question - some samples on Amazon:

Nuno Cristo in Toronto makes and plays a lot of different instruments. He plays portuguese guitar, I'm not sure if he makes them. His site is worth a look (check out "New Instruments"!) and I'm sure he could help you with information, he's a nice guy.

Here's a link to Ron Fernandez's website. He's in the Los Angeles area and is a great guy to talk with, very knowledgeble. He has a whole section of his website dedicate to the Guitarra Portuguesa:

Good luck

Thanks vasileos. Ron is one of the first sources that pops up when doing a search. He's probably the best source here in the States. I'll look him up.

RobJe -> RE: Guitarra Portuguesa (Dec. 19 2007 8:43:57)

For anyone interested in the sound of this guitar I would recommend listening to the guy that accompanies the young fado singer Mariza.
There are other instuments on this recording but the Guitarra Portutuesa is the haunting one that echoes her phrases. I first came across Mariza at a festival in Bilbao and went to see her at her first major London concert. She has a nice website.

That was killer RobJe. Thanks for posting that. Such a beautiful instrument.

RobJe -> RE: Guitarra Portuguesa (Dec. 20 2007 1:28:51)

I know this is a flamenco forum, but if you liked this track Tom you might like to try Concerto em Lisboa w/Bonus DVD [LIVE] - the bonus DVD is a dcoumentary about fado which in addtion to providing a lot about the social and political history, has some fantasitic muscial examples. It is described on

Óscar Cardoso is the most known Portuguese guitar builder, after Gilberto Grácio (retired). He also builds viola de fado (classical guitar with steel strings, used for playing fado) and classical guitars. He is a very good luthier. Recently built a guitar for Pat Metheny.

Sanchez

TANúñez -> RE: Guitarra Portuguesa (Jan. 19 2008 6:49:09)

Hi Sanchez,

Thank you. Do you know if Cardoso has a website?
