wow, that was really cool!

i've always wondered about the tar. my first introduction was with yo yo ma's silk road project.

they all seem to sound so different too, almost more than most guitars do.

that was a terrific vid...clip... thinger lol

Yousef (the luthier) is already booked solid for TWO YEARS??

That means I'd probably not be able to get one from him through my friends in Tehran. [:@]

Thanks for sharing that audio slide-show. Which instrument is more popular in Iran, the tar or the settar? I hear about the settar more often.

i have a tar. beautiful instrument. everyone should play it at least once.

I find it quite wonderful and encouraging that builders of traditional instruments, (including the guitar) still have people desiring their work rather than spending the money on an HD Plasma TV and HDD/DVD Recorder.
Things like that give me hope for the human race.

cheers,

Ron

You are joking - of course it was interesting. It was fascinating!! Amazing instrument and what a great guy - you could tell how much he puts into each instrument.

I have been interested in world music for years, and go to every world music festival in UK I can and I am sad to say I have never heard a tar being played. Thanks Arash

Estevan -> RE: TAR - The traditional iranian instrument (Apr. 15 2008 17:23:08)

Beautiful - mersi, Arash!
There's a fine tar player here in Canada, he has several albums available:
Amir Koushkani

(and it doesn't sound like a pipa at all!)
