I like how when someone says they don't like the first piano flamenco, Carmen says that "maybe we should pay some more respect for the artists!!!!", but she has no problem slagging off Taller de Compás. I think everyone's more than entitled to say if they don't like something, but if you're going to be like that, you should be able to accept people disagreeing with your tastes just as readily. Interesting character, this Carmen [:D]

Hmmm.....My criticism of Flamenco piano is no different from classical guitarists doing flamenco guitar. Its one thing to have a classical player doing an interpretation of a flamenco piece, its another to compose a piece of music based on a flamenco theme, its another to play a piece of traditional spanish music in a classical way...and its another to play music in a true flamenco style. I am not saying any are better than the other, but if you are used to listening to pure flamenco, it becomes difficult to listen to the heavy rubato of classical players such as Narscisco Yepes or the way Segovia played Asturias because those rhythms are meant for dancing. When you hear gypsies play piano, the compas is as tight as if they were playing guitar and the music does not sound classical. I know that my ear has changed since living in Spain. Music i once liked, i cant listen too now unless its played with the correct rhythm. This guy (to me)is doing a classical interpretation of flamenco music....very nice playing but not flamenco

Could it be that there are stereotypes of the flamenco that we get caught up into that we espouse saying it could be no other way? To say, 'this is flamenco and that is not,' would seem to be limiting the overall experiance to a particular following or way. The fact is there are many ways to go about the music, they are all valid, and important. That's what makes it great. I don't know why it has to be a particular voice when there are so many great artists going about their music in the way they hear it. There is so much passion involved, who are we to deny the passion of anyone else? I don't know, I guess I could just go about with these beliefs and just put up with it all and say that I am lucky....I guess you could write me off and say that I feel that flamenco is all inclusive. Now then what do we call the cow? [:D] Seriously though it's not just me, most flamencos I know say the same thing, it is or it isn't flamenco. There's nothing limiting about that. It doesn't stop flamenco influenced music or flamenco fusion from existing or being appreciated. Jose Merce for example sings flamenco, he also does spanish pop, no-one in Spain is confused by this. If you go to a flamenco concert the venue will be smaller the audience older and shout ' Olé '. If it's a pop thing (apparantly) the venue is usually bigger, the audience younger and they tend to scream. Oh and the music is different as well [;)] Kate

It was a great night and we were well honoured to have won the prize. Not sure enchufada is the right word here as that would mean some-one arranged for us to win and I'd like to think we all earned it. Sadly the album is not available anymore, except some copies we left in America after the tour which are being sold on CDbaby. Kate

Hi Ailsa No need to apologise i knew what you meant. Flamenco is qute a small world and after ten years you get to meet a lot of people. I dont really know Dorantes though, we only met that night. I felt like a paparazzi as Andrés the dancer was so overwhel med by all the famous faces he wanted his photo taken with everyone. I took pics of him with Carmen Linares, Farruquito, Juan Carmona, El Portuguesa, Javier la Torre, Manuela Carrasca. Hey shouldn't you be working [;)] I got to get off this computer and go buy things before shops shut and its siesta time. Kate

Kate, thanks for your response, I didn't pose the question to just you but the foro and those who might be thinking about this sort of thing; I didn't expect an answer from any foro member, and I am quite grateful. That was the question, 'do we think of the flamenco in stereotypes?' Maybe that was a bit ambitious, since it is rather a personal question that requires reflection. I shouldn't have elaborated and just left it simple and to the point. But it's out on the foro for anyone to read. I admire your busy life meeting so many people; it must really be quite an experiance............. Gary
