Anders Eliasson -> Peña flamenca de Huelva (Nov. 28 2007 10:10:50)

Hola Amigos

I´ve been going to the peña in Huelva for a bit more than a month now and its really great. The peña itself is very big and quite ugly. It is 2 floors with a big hall full of andalucian chairs. You the ones that look really cool but are horrible to sit on. On the second floor is the academy.

I go there tuesdays and thursdays to have group classes in compás and accompany of cante. My teachers are "Pecas", cantaor Gitano and Antonio, one of the local guitarists who accompany cante. Tuesdays, we focus mainly on compás and accompany a bit some of the singers who are there, and Thursday we concentrate more on chord progressions and different versions of solea por buleria, tangos, alegrias and bulerias. The level is from very basic players to more advanced and everyone can join the show, but at the same time I learn a lot. There´s little theory and its more about playing and learning how to listen. Thursdays we make a round, where each of us sit with a cantaor and try our best to accompany him. Thats great and I´m completely hooked on it. I dont practice falsetas anymore, just compas, chords and fill ins. MUCH more fun.[;)]

I havent had the time to go there fridays, but I´ve been told that I can sit in at the singing lessons. I hope to get the time after christmas. Also because there are shows later in the night.

All in all a very nice place and everything is so down to earth where it belongs. In my 6 years in Granada I didn´t find anything like that... So I´m happy I moved.

Btw. Miguel Angel Cortés has moved to Huelva and teaches here, in case anyone wants lessons.

Wow Anders!
I'm envious...
To me this sounds the ideal way to learn Flamenco.
Of course you'd need to have a reasonable facility with spoken Spanish and be able to live in Spain for a while.
But as I said, I'm really envious.

cheers,

Ron

Hi Anders

Gerat to hear from you. Sounds like you have found a good home and a great flamenco community. I always hear such nice things about Huelva. What you describe though is exactly what Emilio and his Peña Flamenco have just started doing here in Granada, compás, cante, group workshops with baile and performances on Friday nights. They have their eye on a bigger venue as well which would include a bar and more rehearsal space. It's been a long time coming though and I never understood why the Peña Platería did not do more of this sort of thing. They have that massive building and nothing much happens apart from lunch and dinner [;)]

I was out with Pimiento (and Ailsa and her husband Dave) the other night and he was saying that he has seen more Flamenco since he has been in Granada, and counted off about 40 incredible shows.

On saying that we were at the Eshavira and he wisely left before the show started. Nice cante but the guitar was terrible ( wont name names). We also left before the 14 year old on the drum kit began playing [&:]

For the autumn festival we have La Moneta, Manolete, Son de la Frontera and a flamenco nativity with Juan Andrés. I''ll go to that as Emilio and Maya are both in it but will probably have to stuff a hankie in my mouth, seeing friends dressed as the kings and shepherds like a school play may be a bit much but at least it isn't Easter when he gets to play the dying Jesus and nails himself to a cross[:D]

They are just snobs. Its a closed community. They have enough in themselves. Peña Plateria is very beautifull, but also very "dead"

Ron you are right. It feels right to me as well. You get a good strong pulsation when you play in groups. (If you are one of the "hiders")

Yes its more like a golf club sometimes, people join just for social snobby reasons. Such a shame. Mind you we had a great night there for the launch of Estela's book though not many socios were there, just the flamencos and I am ot sure they would have even known about it if I had not told them all. You should find out if she is to do a presentation in Huelva as it was very interesting with slides of old photos to go with her lecture.

So glad you are happy in Huelva and look forward to a trip there sometime maybe next summer.

Kate

Anders that sounds brilliant - you will be the envy of all of us who live somewhere where there isn't much flamenco.

That sounds so fantastic. If only we could get something like that going in London. I'm sure there are enough people here that would be interested. Is the Friday night for the students to perform or professionals?

I think it's just Emilio and the other teachers but its a great idea, will suggest it.
