Small mistake, but I don't want to re-plug the holes....

I used a drill one-size larger, and now my pegs want to seat about halfway through. Ooops.

I am using viola pegs, but I need an oversized one. I found an "oversized viola peg" at 10mm at the top of the shaft (viola.ca), but that's almost what I have on the standard ones, as it is.

I need to find an ebony viola peg with shaft dimensions like 11mm at the top and 8.5-9mm at the bottom, but not some giant button!

Know where to buy?

Try looking here .... all the pegs you will ever need from the german company with "that" name we can't use on the foro....

Largest Standard Model viola peg is 10.5 but there is a 1/4size cello thin peg at 11.5 ( or a 1/16size cello medium peg at 11.5 which will possibly have a smaller button)
All sizes at the button end of peg.

I will strongly recommend that you re-plug the holes.

A thin peg works a LOT better than a thick one. I shave the pegs down to 6mm at the top. This means less friction and also better tuning because you turn less string in one turn of the peg.
You can calculate it yourself, I cant remember the Math formula[;)], but the difference is big.

Besides a 10mm peg at the top.... Looks heavy

I'm about to order a decent peg shaper from D*ck and want to make sure I order the right size.......standard or small violin.

The pegs I have are viola, and are about 9.6 at the base, 7.5 at the top.

The hole is not giant; the peg is about midway through the headplate, so slightly wider is all that would be necessary.

And if I am not mistaken, a thicker peg means less revolutions?

I had originally ordered my pegs from LMI (I think DeVoe usees them?), but to me, those thinner pegs look silly on a flamenco.

Yes and thus making tuning more difficult. more revolutions is like gearing down because you wind up less string on 1 revolution. Believe me it really changes things.

Lester DeVoe shaves his pegs very thin just like me. In fact the first time I tried a peghead with thin pegs, it was on a guitar by Lester.

Stephen, I mean 6mm at the strings. I use an adjustable shaver. I cant remember the name. Its from the US and it came with a very dull blade that needed some work on japaneese waterstones.

The one I´m fitting right now has 6mm top and 7,8mm bottom.

Funny enough, esthetics: You get used to things, and to me a flamenco looks right with thin pegs. The worst is the ones from pegheds.com. They look like elefants legs to me[&:]

The pegheds are 9mm.So much for the elephant leg theory.
They work better than any peg ever fitted.
When I read the nonsense about pegs I remember what the father of juan maya Marote said,"Son bonito pero no vale nada"
I have 5 or 6 high end Spanish flamencos they all need pegheds.(Beginning w/ 2 old Condes)
With pegs you get approximate tuning,The dreaded backspin and an occasional need for pliers (When the humidity is up)
W/ pegheds all that nonsense is OVER!

Its OK that you find that what I write is nonsense.

But maybe its just a matter of taste and nothing else. I think Pegheds look like elefant legs and there are several professional guitarists (also solo concert guitarists) that use normal wooden pegs.

Maybe what is happening is that its YOU who need pegheds and not your guitars.[;)]

There's a guy called Bruce Brooks here in the uk that makes pegs to order. Also will do them for any measurement you ask him. The will usually need a small tweak but they are nice pegs and hand made at very good prices!

I have used planetary pegs for an order before. I liked them. I like pegs, machine pegs and machine heads! all good

Maybe it's elephant skin is indicated for protection from slings and arrows:-)
