Kate -> New book on flamenco by forum member (Oct. 27 2007 20:31:12)

While reading through deflamenco.com I came across this article/review of Estela Zatania's book
https://www.deflamenco.com/tiendaflamenco/veri.jsp?cod=3310

I've not read it yet but sort of travelled the journey with her when she was researching and writing it. What they dont say in this review was that this was a time when Gitanos were rounded up and used as unpaid forced labour on the big cortijos. Estela interviewed people who were born into this life. It was an important stage for flamenco as many different Gypsy families were taken from their neighbourhoods and thrown together mixing up flamenco styles.

She has a book launch here in Granada at the Peña on the 10th November so any forum members in Granada come along, Simon, Marcus, anyone else who's around. She's bringing performers from Seville so there will be live flamenco backing up her research as well as speeches etc.

Ah no ! You know what it's like. Probably around 10 ish but I'll check and send you a pm. It will go on very late so you may want to stay over. There's a bed here as Estela is in a hotel.

Hola Kate

"that this was a time when Gitanos were rounded up and used as unpaid forced labour on the big cortijos."

I don´t think this statement is true, nor what Estela says in her book. The gitanos went to work willingly, were paid, albeit very badly and given somewhere to stay, though it might be no more than a barn without privacy or facilities. It was a way to survive in those days.

Suerte

Sean

Sorry Sean, I've not actually read the book yet. From what I understood they were not given much choice given the circumstances and pay was in food and lodgings, even if they did live with many families in one barn. One interviewee talked about eating beans every day he was there. Anyway I am looking forward to having a copy and will report back when fully informed [:)]

Doitsijun its only available in Spanish at present, wether a translation comes out would depend on the publisher and the demand I suppose.

Kate
