Padre -> remounting an old golpeader (Oct. 23 2007 23:08:28)

I have a vintage Manzanero where the white original (I think) golpeadors are lifting on the edges. I believe they may have been originally hot glued as I understand was common back in the 60s.

What adhesive would be recommended to tack them back down? I think they are made of a vinyl material but not sure (off-white now but probably white when new). I am apprehensive to pull them completely off, anyway they look rather gypsy with them on.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Larry

I had a similar problem with my '69 Ramirez flamenco. I sent it to the resident luthier at GSI. He did an excellent job.

I would strongly recommend that you have the work done by a reputable luthier. It could save you a lot of heart ache.

I have the same problem on a 67 manuel de la Chica but the golpeador is transparent (although I'm not sure it's acetate -- it seems to be less flexible and harder than modern transparent golpeadors). I think it was put on with hide glue (???)

It started to peel up like yours in about 1980 and I had a competent luthier in a Maryland suburb stick it back down (he had worked on one of Segovia's guitars during one of his Wash DC tours, so I figured I could trust him). He didn't take it off the guitar, rather worked glue into the space where it ad peeled up, and as a result the glue under he golpeador looks weird. It is studk down, but there are air spaces and bubbles.
