Filip -> Paco in Belgrade (Oct. 21 2007 16:31:00)

Paco played in Belgrade on Thursday, so, lets say a few words about it!

The concert supposed to start at 20:30! I was there early, so I went staight to the place where Paco supposed to enter! After that, el Pirana, la Chonchi and Montse went out to smoke a cigar! I took a photo with them and talked a little, especially with la Chonchi! They were very nice to me, and in a good mood! I was lucky because, after a few minutes they got back in, Nino Josele went out to smoke his cigar! He was also very nice to me, asked me if I play the guitar and we talked a little! I took a photo with him too! Chonchi told me that Paco didn’t arrive from the airport yet, so I decided to wait a little!
I think that the plane was late, and Paco arrived just 10 minutes before the concert, straight from the airport! A few people waited for an autograph! When he came out of the car, he ran to the entrance looking at us saying: ”despues, despues, I’m very late, very late..”! It was a very interesting scene ! Soon, it was announced that the concert will begin with 1h late! It was good, I was afraid that Paco will be tired and that he wont warm up, but I was wrong!

The concert began and there’s no words to describe it! Paco played brilliant, he seemed very motivated and not tired! Every note was absolutely perfect, clean and his picados were played at the speed of light! All musicians were great and for me, a flute was something new! Also, it was my first time listening the beautiful voice of la Chonchi live!
And I don’t know why, but Paco didn’t play “Cositas Buenas”!

After the concert some people, including me and another foro member, el_menco, waited Paco to come out! We didn’t wait long, he was very nice, took pictures with everyone and gave autographs! I exchange a few words with him too, he signed me the picture I took with him last year with “A Felipe, con cariño”, and that’s it!

I will upload some pictures soon!

Regards

Nice report!! Got me all excited as I'm gonna be working backstage at Paco concert in London in about 4 weeks. Can't wait!!!

Its also nice to hear you enjoyed the music and you reported that Paco played very well as I've heard some bad reports and more negative feedback from people recently.

Thanks for the review
Stu

I read bad reports too, but this concert showed that Paco can still play like 20 years ago!

I just watched the Francisco Sanchez DVD and he said that he couldn't go to a concert with that beard. He has lost a lot of hair though.

Thanks Ron [:)]

Yes, but that was before 2003, when the dvd was published! Now he plays with the beard, and I like it! It's more artistic in some way... (just my opinion)!

Ricardo -> RE: Paco in Belgrade (Oct. 24 2007 5:58:56)

I love Chonchi.

Filip -> RE: Paco in Belgrade (Oct. 28 2007 23:02:54)

Chonchi said after the concert that she is going to publish her new album next year and it would be more flamenco than her last [:)] I cant wait, I fell in love in her voice when I had heard it for the first time, and how beautiful it is live...

Filip -> RE: Paco in Belgrade (May 17 2024 1:17:54)

I'd like to give an interesting follow-up of the concert I reported above :)

A guy who is an organiser of the Guitar Art festival (GAF) in Belgrade gave an interview in a local magazine. Paco played quite a few times at the GAF after Cositas Buenas, one of which was the mentioned concert.
I put below in quote the part of the interview in which Paco is mentioned (translation is mine).

quote:

Q: Would you like to outline one moment from the cooperation you had with some of the world-known artists?

A: I will always remember the first time I organised Paco de Lucia's concert back in 2007. I picked up Paco at a gas station because he was coming by car from Pula, Croatia. In the evening, I took Paco and his manager to Skadarlija [a bohemian quater in Belgrade], to "Tri Šešira" restaurant, where we stayed until 1am. I thought after that Paco would go to a hotel since he was giving a concert the next day. However, in front of the restaurant Paco told me: "I have a problem, I can't sleep, so where do we go next?". His manager looked at me and just said: "This is Paco". In that moment I figured out I should take Paco to "Black Panters" [a tavern on the Sava river in Belgrade and the gipsy band of the same name that plays there]. We stayed there until 7 in the morning. Paco was fascinated by the local rhythms, he gathered local musicians around him and made them hit spoons on the table to mark the irregular Balkan rhythms. He was impressed by the existence of more complicated rhythms than those of traditional flamenco. When I finally took Paco to a hotel, he asked me to wake him up one hour before the concert. The concert he gave the next day was incredible.

Ricardo -> RE: Paco in Belgrade (May 17 2024 11:39:21)

Amazing he still had that energy only 7 years before he passed. I don’t have that anymore, I get tired. But I get up very early everyday during school days, and it has worn me down. Too much coffee to wake up and I can’t get back to sleep for siesta. But we used to stay up all night like that, and the siesta that Paco basically took later in the day, that is the best way to manage it.
