Adam -> yasmin levy - ladino/jewish singer (Oct. 9 2007 22:15:18)

hey there - my friend, who's in a jewish a capella group on campus, just showed me this:

yasmin levy, an israeli singer singing in ladino, a sort of hybrid jewish-spanish language. it's got a definite flamenco influence (there's even a very nice solea on her myspace), as well as, of course, israeli influences. it highlights the relationship these cultures have had over the centuries and sounds pretty decent. very nice voice, kind of estrella morente-esque, i think. has anyone else heard of her? what's the general consensus? [:D]

She also sings the song you hear over the closing credits of Vengo 'Naci en Alamo (the Gypsy song)' and I've heard another one of her tracks on a compilation.
I was almost going to buy one of her CD's but have made a pact with myself not to make my CD collection larger than it already is, but as you noted her voice is very nice and melodic... at times even Estrella Morente is a bit too cante for me

I've seen her at a concert here in Sweden. I love the music. She herself is really theatrical. I like her for it.. but sometimes she's a bit too much. There is another great sephardic singer, Fracoise Atlan, she's a bit more composed but sings beatifully as well.
