cmon kate. its very easy to be famous as a flamenco guitarist.

Do it like Ottmar Liebert.
Play some rumba chords,
take your shoes and socks off when you perform,
close your eyes while playing and pretend to have deep feelings when you play an A-maj chord. [:D]

Thats it!

......and off he went [8D]

....and wear a waistcoat..... and get some black and white photos of yourself playing an old Ramirez in the shade of a whitewashed backstreet while an impossibly beautiful raven haired flamenco dancer looks longingly in your direction.......

Perhaps genuine improvisation is best home for this type of material and not a prearranged composition trying to sound improvised ?

I am sure we all understand the difference between flamenco improv and jazz improv? In anycase, even in bulerias like Vicente's where it is all the old falsetas from the first album plus some new ones, the "improv" is more in the spur of the moment arrangement. It can come out logical and flowing, or disjointed, it depends. I have seen Paco REPEAT a falseta by accident, realize it and just stop and laugh in the middle.

So it can go different ways, and that is the beauty and problem with improvisation. Point is, it is not wrong to do it in flamenco, and as a soloist or accompanist, being able to do it is important. Not everyone has to like it. As the music gets more sophisticated, evolving in the "modern" direction, sure plenty of folks are not going to like it or understand it or accept it. Not the reason to go back and play the same old stuff the same way just to make em happy. But if he does, that is fine too so long as that is what the artists WANTS to do. It is his choice. The audience does not have to like it. I have heard aficionados saying a couple years ago "i refuse to go to Paco's concert because it is the same old thing I saw 10 years ago". THen he comes with all NEW music and people go " what is THAT? I wish he would play the old stuff..." etc etc.

Anyway, it is a pointless circular arguement. I just think when players are good, they are good. If you don't like it fine, but you can at least respect what they do even if you would do it different. And sure there are times that good players play like crap. Can we every forgive them? Personally, I don't forgive artists that "hold back" what they have for the sake of whatever, be it money, or commercialism, or what they think is "good taste". Life is too short to hold back what you have to show.

I know most of those Vicente flasetas and I really do feel that he was improvising in a full blooded and fully realised way that night and that that is why is was so fresh and exciting. To my ears this was something which I rarely hear in flamenco and very rarely in guitar at all, more the kind of thing that I would associate with a real good pre fusion jazz artist. To my ears Vicente transcends the normal degree of alteration that I have heard in flamenco here there was a real recombination of the motifs, kind of like Sonny Rollins ( not my favourite sax player but a real master of this kind of thing ), I thought that it was awesome !

I am one hundred percent in agreement with you (Ricardo)on the point that if we have the knowledge to realise that a player is as fully accomplished as Mr Trassiera clearly is then we should still give him respect as an artist even if we do not particularly like his direction at a given moment. Personally I was impressed and interested in his performance but not moved in any particular way. I fully accept that one day he may blow my mind emotionally as well as technically.

I'll keep an eye out and look forward to that day.

Wow you really feel that way?? Perhaps you have not followed his live shows over the years, but he has certainly evolved his playing since he first made those falsetas 18 years ago. I think everything he played in that clip I have heard him play before, it was just a rather inspired performance, and a new arrangement.

Me too.
