Nino_S -> AL DI MEOLA, PACO DE LUCIA - Concert review (Sep. 9 2007 17:51:17)

Two months ago Al di Meola have concert in mine country. (Croatia), which I attend.
But in this post I would like to ask why does this pople act like they are some kind of God.
For example, Meola had on stage, let's call him "waterboy".
When the papers with notes (in the break between two songs) fall on the ground, he didn't even tried to bend and pick it up by himself.
He just looked "waterboy" who came immediately and pickup the papers.
The similar thing was with his second guitar which was very close to him but didn't want to change by himself, but just
command with blink of eye to waterboy to give him.

What I liked in Meola was good communication with audience.
He introduced the bend members and sometimes announced the song which will play and author (Piazzola, etc.).

A year ago I was on Paco de Lucia concert in Pula (Croatia).
Well in this section I don't want to discuss about music but about his behaviour.
The concert was taking 2 hours and all words that Paco said was "Hey" in the beggining when someone from audience said out loud PACOOO!!!.
Come on people, at least he could said good evening (on English or Spanish whatever), or for example that he's representing new album or so, he didn't even introduced band members (the second guitar was Nino Josele), on the end he didn't said thanks or goodbye, just walked off from stage.
I think that was very rude!

Mine point of view is that he didn't have to shake hands with everyone, give signatures, etc..., but only Hey in 2 hours.
This is so poor.

The talent of this two players is undisputable, they are talking with their instruments, but saying 4-5 sentences is not a big problem ha?
He could even curse on Spanish, but man just say something.

In att is few pictures from Meola concert, on Paco I didn't bring photocamera.

What is your opinion on this? Any similar experience?

Regards

Nino

Well in USA, you are a lucky dude to be a "wannabe" guitarist that got the "guitar tech" job. That means you get to go on world tours, and get paid to tune guitars and stuff. Not sure I would want to have that job for Al di, but for Paco sure! He can call me whatever the hell he wants, yell at me for out of tune guitars or a the wrong height chair or footstool etc. You would have to be a complete stone head moron to mess up in a sweet gig like that! About Al Di's guitar tech, some one told me that there was a big problem with Al di's guitar, and it turned out to be a dead battery in the guitar.[8|] I mean, if that were my job, I would ask to be fired![:D]

The guy is 60 and has been touring EVERY YEAR since he was 15. His only obligation is to play his guitar. He keeps saying he will retire. I consider myself lucky that I saw him on tour this year, even though I know he is slowing down interms of energy. Tomatito did not say much in concdert either. Guitarists like these guys talk with the guitar.

Hm, i dont find it good that he doesnt introduce band members. I mean, he is not doing this only for money i guess, he also wants to plane the way for other musicians. On a Youtube video he introduces them at least.

Its not a problem if he says 5 sentences, but its also not a problem if he doesnt say anything. So, not really interesting IMO.

I have seen several concerts of Paco. They usually have an announcer before the program starts and all members are named. But usually Paco yells out everyone's name during the end Rumba, perhaps he missed ir or did not hear it? But I guess, it is not a big deal if he does or not really.

I don't see this as such a big problem.

But what bothers me, is that everytime I watch some clip from a recent Paco's concert, I can't get rid of the feeling that they are all extremely bored, that they don't even want to be on stage. Seems like they all just wait for concert to end (especially Paco).

I said that once on Youtube and was of course considered as an idiot...

Tomorrow I'm gonna watch the God of the guitar Himself play live in the city I live(Thessaloniki), so this threads' blasphemy annoys me a little bit..I saw him last year in Belgrade and he really is bored on stage, he forces himself to smile, he wants to be elsewhere. At the standing ovation after his final rumba he kept shouting something angrily in Josele's ear, instead of thanking the overwhelmed and enthusiastic audience(very funny scene, I assure you!). Ricardo is right, he plays concerts for over four decades and after all he's 60 years old, he can't have the energy he had until 10 years ago. But the thing is that Paco never was much happy or comfortable on stage(his playing was and still is). He says it himself in many interviews. For example, watch him play "mantilla del feria" on the F. Sanchez DVD, at his twenties. They applaud him and he is unwilling to take a bow or smile but he does it because he has to. He is not like the warm-hearted Tomatito who makes a mistake and smiles. Paco gets angry with his mistakes and the mistakes of his band. Check the liner notes of "Castro Marin" CD and you'll see what I mean. Check him out in many videos of concerts across his carrer, most of the times he is strict and dissatisfied. If Paco was doing it only for the money , he would be the perfect professional, which means he would talk to the audience in any language, pretend he is having the best nigth of his life etc. He doesn't do that because that's who he is and has always been. He plays as if he is doing as a favour. But he does, mates..
