Haithamflamenco -> My first hand made cajon (Sep. 5 2007 16:27:01)

Hola flamencos,

This is my first hand made Cajon,

I built it in about one year ago,

ya i know, I am late to post it,

At that time i decide to build a cajon, i search the net and i found some german cajon plan,

i only take the dimensions and show them to Oud luthier,

we worked together until we built the first cajon in Bahrain,

we had some problems with the snare strings, thier position,

we adjusted them until we get the real cajon sound,

any way here are some photos,

Georg -> RE: My first hand made cajon (Sep. 5 2007 18:14:32)

Nice one. I've made two myself. Is there any application to change the tension of the strings?

Ailsa -> RE: My first hand made cajon (Sep. 5 2007 19:12:59)

Looks great Haitham - can we hear how it sounds?

The luthier makes some great looking instruments too.[:)][:)]

Good job! Is it PLYwood or SOLID wood? Most of the cheaper ones are ply, from what I've seen. And yes, you were lucky to have this lute-luthier handy to help you!

hayy flamencos,

thanks all for you nice comments,

The cajon sounds really great and different,

it has a very deep bass due to the thickness of the wood that have been used to build it,

about 12 mm thickness as well as the size of the Cajon,

44 cm height, 30 cm length and 31.5 width,

and its plywood cause i couldn’t manage to find a solid wood here wide enough to built this cajon,

i used the best quality of plywood which the peach plywood,

we had a problem with the snare strings position, according to the plan the strings should be at the top left and right corner only,

well we try this type of insulation and it didn’t work , there was no snare or sustain at all.

so i change the position of the strings to shape f W from top to bottom and stick the string to the front plate with some stick tabs and it works,

and about the application to change the tension of the strings,

i used the Oud tuners which are same of the flamenco traditional Pegs,

but it didn't work very well, cause it was difficult to turn them inside the Cajon,

Georg -> RE: My first hand made cajon (Sep. 6 2007 9:34:14)

If you like, I can post a picture, how you should place the strings, and how you can change tension.

It won't work anymore for that one though.

What wood is the front plate?

Haithamflamenco -> RE: My first hand made cajon (Sep. 6 2007 10:06:29)

yes please ,

the front are the same wood but 2mm thickness,

i am also not sure about the type of strings that i should use,

i used electric guitar strings e and a,

Georg -> RE: My first hand made cajon (Sep. 6 2007 23:30:13)

Thats the bottom of the cajon.

These are screws with a certain kind of screw nut (I don't know the proper word for them.) The screw nuts can be fixed on the wood, so that you can change the tension by turning the screws
