Escribano -> A quick Hola from Jerez (Mar. 3 2004 16:33:50)

This town is flamenco central during the festival. Sharing an apartment with Fergus and hooked up with Estela and Emma on several evenings. I've seen Mario Maya´s dancers from Granada, a fantastic session from Lole (she sang the butterfly song in Saura´s Flamenco movie), Manolote, Chocalate, Rubichi, Nino Josele, Manuela Carpio and several famous people I have never heard of[;)]

Penas start at midnight or 1:00am, this morning we got home at 5:30am! Fantastic informal session in the bar of Pena Los Cernicales - the real thing. No stage, no set list, no rehearsal, just passing the guitar around and taking turns singing. I am hoping to get Fergus a slot while we are here. He is very good.

We've managed several hours of practise most days - Fergus is a great help as I do my exercises and struggle with the Tangos.

I´ll write in again soon. Take care and practise!

Simon

awesome, Simon, take some pictures, learn some tips to pass on to us normals.

Melchor -> RE: A quick Hola from Jerez (Mar. 4 2004 11:55:18)

As soon as arrived to Jerez I went to the flat to see the guys. It was 9 in the evening and the guys where in bed recovering from the night before (6 in the morning). Thanks God Fergus girlfriend was there to open the door. They just couldn´t be bothered to get up[;)]
It looks like Simon is getting as lot of practice with Fergus help. At about 11 we made our way to peña Los Cernicalos. It was too quite. Just people sitting around watching a video. But Ferrgus had brought his guitar. We told the bar tender to turn the tv off. As soon as Fergus started playing, a guy who I have seen singing a few times performing in Jerez came in. I asked him to sing. He started singing and Fergus accompanied him. Alegrias then Bulerias. Then another gipsy singer came in accompanied of some foreign guitarrists. This guy was really good. He even taught the audience to follow him with palmas as everyone was out of compas( 80 per cent of thr people in the peñas were foreigners) By that time Simon was already pissed making friends and inviting everyone for a drink.[;)]Emma(El Craic) arrived to the peña as she had been in another peña watching somebody else. Then Marci, one of the singers who go on tour with Jose Merce and who we had met in London after Jose Merce´s concert came in as well. He recognised me and introduce a friend called Paco Lara. Paco Lara grabed Fergus guitar and started playing like the angels accompanying Marci. It was 4 in the morning and we had had an overdosis of flamenco so we decided to come back home.

Today Emma and I are going to see Farruquito. We´ll meet the guys again after the concert in the peña. It was my first day in Jerez and I am already nackered. I think I should take it a bit easier with the wine.[:D]

Sounds wonderful Melchor!
It seems Fergus is a bit of a wizz at the Cante accompaniment!
I'm very impressed that he's able to accompany a Gitano singer he's never met before!
If Simon's carrying his usual array of expensive, portable miniature hi tech state-of-the-art gizmos, maybe you could record some playing and general ambiente of the peñas for us?
Or is Simon not sober enough to operate it?
Anyway we're all green with envy here!

cheers

Ron

Melchor -> RE: A quick Hola from Jerez (Mar. 4 2004 13:15:04)

Hi Ron

I must say Fergis looked a bit scared but he performed well. Yeah I think I saw Simon recording Fergus in the peña.

Un saludo

Melchor

I forgot my MD recorder [:(] but got some great little video clips of later events at the peña, including a very intimate late hour session with the Moneo family, the young son accompanying his father, Manuel, the grandson of another Manuel.

Last night Estela and I cooked paella we had some folks around for a juerga, including our new cantaor buddie, Jaimie who teaches cante and cajon here. He sings with Moraito occasionally. He gave Emma, Fergus and me some free lessons the other day.

I got a few video snips of a bulerias and beautiful soleares from our supper. Jaimie and Estela singing with Fergus and Melchor accompanying, drunk [;)] I got a touch of duende last night and get goosebumps thinking about it now.

Like all good flamencos, the police had to come around and break us up about 2:30am[:o]

I must, I must find a singer, it all makes sense with a singer leading the way.

Tomatito tonight, on to peña Los Cernicalos and bed by 6am, tomorrow is the last day of the festival with a trio of cantaores at peña Los Cernicalos again. Gives me two days to recover and get out of these vampire hours.

I really am scratching the surface of flamenco and this experience but I will try and write it up when I get back.

Wish you were all here with us. ¿Maybe in September?

A Jere´!

el ted -> RE: A quick Hola from Jerez (Mar. 11 2004 13:44:50)

tHIS ALL SOUNDS PERFECTLY HORRIBLE! I am so pleased I am sat in my office in sunny Hull than out there in Jerez. ( sometimes I talk b-------cks!)

Melchor -> RE: A quick Hola from Jerez (Mar. 13 2004 18:37:57)

Hola! This isn´t Melchor it´s El Craic posing as Melchor and stealing his computer. I just got in to London Gatwick today and am staying with Melchor, back to N Ire tomorrow.

Just to say hi and that I had a more fantastic time in Jerez then anyone could expect to have themselves. Made some great friends, chatting to great people heard some great flamenco, from the modern to the authentic, and of course it was the authentic which made it for me. Learned a huge lot about what i need to be doing and set some goals for the next year.

When my head stops buzzing i am looking forward to sharing stories and memories. Simon and Estela etc, a huge hug to you for helping turn a great flamenco experience into something more special not to mention all the laughs. Stomach still hurts!!!!

Catch up with you soon.

Hasta la vista chica and take care of that guitar. Hope you didn't get too wet this morning stumbling up the hill with two guitars, a rucksack and your handbag[:D]

Florian -> RE: A quick Hola from Jerez (Mar. 14 2004 2:26:54)

IT sounds greate guys !!!! good on you Fergusito !(mucho cojones)[:D]
I cant wait to see some clips or hear some things.

El Craic -> RE: A quick Hola from Jerez (Mar. 14 2004 13:41:17)

I did get horribly wet stumbling uphill with two guitars and a 'handbag'. You FUNNY man!!! [8D] [:D]

And I found my ironic flamenco doll for my flatmate. The cashier was visibly disgusted with me and so was Melchor. Ha ha.
