Taranto -> Avatars (Aug. 13 2007 17:48:58)

Hi guys, Every time I login I have to go to my profile and tick the "Don't Show member's Avatar in posts" check box, since this forum for one or another reason can't save your choice. However sometimes I'm a bit lazy and try to read without disabling avatars, just to disable it a couple of minutes later when I get fed up. What's the purpose of avatars anyway? When I was a kid and played cowboy-indian with other kids, I used to say I'm Smith (from Smith and Jones TV series) or if Smith was already taken I would say I'm Manolo (from High Chaparral). I see some members have Paco's or other famous people's picture as avatar. Is this the same thing as "I'm Paco" or does it serve other goals? Every single time you are reading member X' message Tomatito's picture is shown (no Tom I'm not talking about you [:D]). It feels as if Tomatito is the poster. Some other members have the killer animated avatars. Honestly they are as distracting as flashing internet ads on a heavily ad-supported website. I mean a picture or animation is nice to see a few times, but not 40 times daily [:D] Cheers, Taranto
