What is this guitar called? Why do some builders choose this form? Does it really improve sound? Could it be used for flamenco guitars?

It's a Manuel Contreras 'Calevario'.
Stupid looking thing IMO

Hi!

This looks like one of the experiments by Contreras. The idea was to increase the soundboard area. It wasn't very successful for a classical and I can't see it as a good idea for a flamenco..

Good observation, for some reason the sound hole was cut and then placed back in again. It's removeable. No idea what it sounds like 'in the flesh' but if you were playing it and sat your coffee mug on it it would just slide off[:o]

It's a Contreras Carlevaro model. The sound is ported out the slots you can see on the perimeter of the body, no sound hole needed. It's a very expensive guitar. I think the sound is lovely although who can tell with a microphone. We make a similar guitar with double sides and double back with porting around the perimeter although ours has a traditional shape and sound hole. We call them "double bodies". Well suited to classic or flamenco although some people find the weight disturbing.
