Taranto -> Effect of soundbox depth (Jul. 27 2007 11:38:16)

Hi all,

I'm trying to understand how soundbox depth affects the sound but find little information.

Any insights?

If what I was taught is correct, the shallower the soundbox (ie the smaller the internal volume), the louder the guitar is. But you can also affect this by adjusting the size of the soundhole. Can't quite remember what scientific formulae are involved... might be Helmoltz, although I suspect Helmholtz is more concerned with the resonating pitch.

Furthermore I just read that the low frequency sounds resonate the bridge which then resonates the soundboard, which in turn resonates the air inside the soundbox, which in turn resonates the back and sides. Finally the back and sides reflect the waves back to the soundboard and into our ears.

However the high frequency sounds don't travel that much, just from bridge to the soundboard and into our ears.

Don't know ...
