JBASHORUN -> RE: Question? (Jul. 16 2007 19:40:40)

LOL, this sounds like a question for Ailsa, Romanza, Buleria, Kate, etc. I dare not answer it... controversial religious threads are one thing, but a woman's wrath is another! [:D] Btw, I was reading some of the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer's work recently, and something he said made me laugh: "One needs only to see the way she is built to realize that woman is not intended for great mental or for great physical labour. She expiates the guilt of life not through activity but through suffering, through the pains of child-birth, caring for the child and subjection to the man, to whom she should be a patient and cheering companion. Great suffering, joy, exertion, is not for her: her life should flow more quietly, trivially, gently than the man's without being essentially happier or unhappier". He does go on to make points about why women are best suited to nursing and teaching roles due to their "childish, short-sighted and silly" nature, but I think his views are probably best not dwelled on. Schopenhauer is considered "a great mind" by many, but I can only think that his perspective on the fairer sex was strongly influenced by the patriarchal spirit of his era. Jb
