Can you post photos of the guitar and it's label?

JBASHORUN -> RE: MANUEL DIAZ GUITARS GRANADA (Jul. 7 2007 18:46:53)

See here:

http://www.johnguitar.com/gitarer.htm

There's FRANCISCO Manuel Diaz, and VICTOR Manuel Diaz.

Yours APPEARS to be by FRANCISCO, and Francisco is apparently a master who learned from various great luthiers, and taught some too.

But keep in mind the possibility that it might be a fake... especially if you bought it cheaply.

I think Stephen Hill mentions Manuel Diaz on his website:

I don't know enough to say for sure whether its real or fake. Stephen Hill (another member) would probably be able to tell you. But for seventy pounds, it doesn't really matter if it IS fake... as long is plays good.

But if it turns out NOT to be fake, then you got a pretty damn good deal!!!

Google search Francisco Manuel Diaz, and you'll get plenty of info.

JBASHORUN -> RE: MANUEL DIAZ GUITARS GRANADA (Jul. 7 2007 23:12:28)

Yes there are always fakes about. I've seen fake Condes and Barberos, and even heard of a fake De La Chica. Flamenco guitars are big business and any big business attracts a few shady people:

But as I said, I can't say for sure if yours is genuine or not. But just to give you an idea of what sort of guitars Diaz makes: Adam Del Monte plays one:

TANúñez -> RE: MANUEL DIAZ GUITARS GRANADA (Jul. 8 2007 0:38:02)

It's a Francisco Manuel Diaz. I like them very much. However, I have heard that "other people" also build some of his guitars. Don't know who these "other people" are or if it's even true. I do know he builds guitars.

The one guy who could probably tell you more about them is Adam del Monte. He plays his guitars and really likes them. He may even know him personally.

TANúñez -> RE: MANUEL DIAZ GUITARS GRANADA (Jul. 8 2007 15:14:24)

guitardode,

You can upload a sound or video clip on the audio and video upload section. This guitar has the head design as is on the others I've seen. I don't think it's a fake. However, I have seen different head designs and labels. I have even seen a photo of him building a guitar with yet another head design. Maybe he just redesigned them through the years.

Don't get too upset about the fakes comment. It does happen. Let us know what Adam says.

JBASHORUN -> RE: MANUEL DIAZ GUITARS GRANADA (Jul. 8 2007 15:35:43)

stephen hill -> RE: MANUEL DIAZ GUITARS GRANADA (Jul. 8 2007 18:15:43)

manuel Diaz is one of the granadan guitarmakers working on the famous cuesta de gomerez, the road leading up to the alhambra. He is a good maker, likes to experiment a good deal. When I was in granada in 1988 he showed me a perspex back and sides guitar he had built. Interesting but I wasnt so sure about the sound. He has recently made some nice guitars using some cypress from the generalife gardens and charged accordingly! A nice maker, making fairly dry guitars. He is a good player and doesnt have to work too hard as he has won the spanish lottery more than once. !!
He also sells an estudio model with his label, made in valencia as do many makers in granada.

guitardode -> RE: MANUEL DIAZ GUITARS GRANADA (Jul. 8 2007 18:35:38)

HI STEPHEN
THANKS FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION STILL NOT SURE IF ITS A STUDENT TYPE MODEL OR ONE OF HIS OWN AM GOING TO POST A VIDEO CLIP TO SEE IF ANYONE CAN SAY! HAVE HEARD YOUR GUITARS PLAYED AND AM VERY IMPRESSED BY YOUR" OWN SOUND" GLAD TO SEE YOUVE JOINED THE RANKS OF RECOGNISED MAKERS IN THIS UNIQUE CITY...
HAND CRAFTED GUITARS REALLY SEEM TO HAVE A VOICE OF THEIR OWN AS OPPOSED TO THE MASS ASSEMBLY LOT WHICH IS UNIFORMLY STANDARD (IN TONALITY) WHEN I WIN THE NATIONAL LOTTERY WILL BE THE FIRST TO CALL YOU UP FOR A GUITAR!!!!!!
ALL THE BEST[:)]

guitardode,

When it's all said and done, it really shouldn't matter who made your guitar. As long as you like it and enjoy playing it. THAT'S what matters.

Your label appears to have some type of signature so it very may be made by him.

guitardode -> RE: MANUEL DIAZ GUITARS GRANADA (Jul. 8 2007 19:22:55)

HI TOM
YES YOUR QUITE RIGHT I AM ENJOYING PLAYING IT OUTSIDE MY HOUSE AS THE SUN IS GOING DOWN HERE ON A LOVELY EVENING .TOOK A LOOK AT YOUR WEBSITE AND YOUR LOVELY SELECTION OF GUITARS (THE DE VOE IS EXQUISIT)AND THE OTHERS VERY IMPRESSIVE EVEN IN THESE MODERN TIMES GREAT CRAFTSMANSHIP STILL EXISTS[8D]

TANúñez -> RE: MANUEL DIAZ GUITARS GRANADA (Jul. 8 2007 19:43:17)

Hi guitardode,

Thanks for the compliments. That DeVoe actually belongs to Patrick Harris, a member of this foro. The craftsmanship of a DeVoe is top notch. Come to think of it, recently, I've noticed that the craftsmanship from American builders is very high. Not to say it's not high quality on Spanish makers. It is as well on some. The majority of my sales are from Spanish builders and from time to time I see craftsmanship that is ok but not great. However, of the few American builders I carry, I see very nice work. John Shelton (Shelton-Farretta) a fine craftsmen. As is DeVoe, Green, Tom Rodriguez. I don't know why this is. Perhaps because they build less a year or at a time than some Spanish builders? Then again, DeVoe builds about 20 a year which IMO, is quite a bit for one guy.

However, Ramirez builds quite a few and I think they have some of the best craftsmenship. As did Tezanos Perez (while they were still together) Anyway, this is a discussion/topic all to it's own. Don't want to hijack your topic and switch it to another [&:]

Happy playing man and post a clip if you ever get a chance.

RobJe -> RE: MANUEL DIAZ GUITARS GRANADA (Jul. 8 2007 22:16:54)

I agree that the main issue is whether you like the guitar - whoever made it!
Looking at the pictures of F Manuel Diaz guitars on the Dan Zeff website it would appear that the head on yours is a different design. The most likely reasons are (i) the guitar was made for him by someone else (ii) the headstock design is reserved for 'estudio' models - or both.
I don't think you have to worry about fakes unless you are buying a legendary guitar! You need more than a label to make a proper fake - the constructional and cosmetic details should have some relation to the original.
The 'Marcelino Barbero' described as a fake on ebay is not really a fake but it does contain two minor deceptions. It has a Ramirez head design (very common in Japanese made guitars made in the 60s and 70s ). Thousands of violins have the Stradivarius head but nobody believes that these are the real thing. The name 'Marcelino Barbero' was invented by Sherry Brenner and most people believe that he was trying to 'suggest' that these guitars were made by the son of Marcelo Barbero (whose labels say Marcelo Barbero Hijo). Google Sherry Brenner and you will find that few people believe much of what he says!
Franciso Manuel Diaz pursued a career as a flamenco guitarist and made fewer guitars than some of his contemporaries. The much pictured perspex back guitar was made sometime in the 70s. He has done a lot of restorations of old guitars. Once in Poland I found a Polish LP made from a concert that he did in Warsaw with a few friends.
Enjoy your guitar!
Rob

Hi, interesting discussion, as I was in Granada on March 27th 2012 and tried to peep inside the workshop of some guitarbuilder at the foot of the Alhambra. And guess? This must be the workshop of Francisco Manuel Diaz. Unfortunately the guy just had his siesta, which everybody else in Spain seems to have between 14:00 and 17:00 pm.

etta -> RE: MANUEL DIAZ GUITARS GRANADA (Apr. 4 2012 15:47:53)

When I was visiting Diaz's shop in 2010, I was moderately impressed with his guitars; however he handed me a guitar built by his son; it was probably one of the best two or three guitars I tried in Spain, and the price was very reasonable. Diaz was beaming with pride over his son's work. I regret not buying it.
