Bogdan1980 -> Fdereico Garcia Lorca (Jun. 19 2007 19:03:38)

So check this out. Lorca was lways one of my favourite poets, when I was growing up in former USSR. Only much later in US when there was more access to records I found out that PdL played his pieces and Lorca was also a musician. And this was one of my favourite poem especially the last three lines. I used to read it in russian, sounded good but not even close to spanish version.

Empieza el llanto
de la guitarra.
Se rompen las copas
de la madrugada.
Empieza el llanto
de la guitarra.
Es inutil callarla.
Es imposible
callarla.
Llora monotona
como llora el agua,
como llora el viento
sobre la nevada.
Es imposible
callarla.
Llora por cosas
lejanas.
Arena del Sur caliente
que pide camelias blancas.
Llora flecha sin blanco,
la tarde sin mañana,
y el primer pajaro muerto
sobre la rama.
¡Oh guitarra!
Corazon malherido
por cinco espadas.

He is a genius.[:)]
Thanks for bringing him up.
Yes, if I'm not wrong he played piano and made some records with female singer. I once had them on my pc. But it's not flamenco.
His work in general was deeply affected by this art.

ps:oh, you probably typed it wrong, he's Federico.[;)]

Yes Federico, I make mistakes like that in my own name. Well some of the stuff that Paco plays sounds very flamenco like EL Vito or Zorongo Gitano, don't you think?

Yes, Pacos cd is flamenco,
I was saying that I had recordings of Lorca himself playing piano and that music wasn't flamenco.

Wow that is even more interesting, can you buy those CDs still or is it an old recording?

Matic -> RE: Fdereico Garcia Lorca (Jun. 20 2007 14:56:44)

Si, you can buy the recordings (I didn't...there are alternatives[8|])

Its called "Colleción de Canciones Populares Españolas" with Lorca on Piano and La Argentinita singing. They are old folk songs. Estrella Morente also does a version of "Los Cuatro Muleros" from this album.

If you want flamenco AND Lorca there are two great CDs called "Los Gitanos Cantan Lorca" which are flamenco versions of his poems.

Another album which I dont think is available any more is " De Granada a la Luna" a homaje to Lorca on the 100th anniversary of his birth. These are a collection of his poems done by modern artists not just flamencos. Enrique Morente was the producer, my husband Harold did the mixing and mastering. Morente does a version of La Guitara, the poem you posted above. Then you have Neneh Cherry doing "Landscape of a pissing multitude" from Lorca's amazing "Poeta en Nuevo York" and Compay Segundo from Buena Vista Social Club with his wonderful version of "Son de Negros de Cuba". On the CD 'Gitanos cantan Lorca' this is sung by Esperanza Fernández

My favourite Flamenco 'songs' inspired by Lorca's writing is Pata Negra with his " Bodas De Sangre" and Manzanita's "Verde"

Kate
