Hi all,
I'm a Spanish guy who loves flamenco. No friends in town to share moments playing records or going to gigs. I feel quite silly with this post but i really miss sharing flamenco moments with friends.
Salud y libertad.[:)]

Ever been to Costa Dorada, 47-55 Hanway Street near Tottenham Court Rd & Oxford St.?

I used to go there when I lived in London but I wasn't that into flamenco and it was many years ago so I cannot comment now.

Soy de Londres en Granada. Un saludo y bienvenido a nuestro foro.

cosa -> RE: London Flamenco (Jun. 19 2007 15:56:02)

Hi Escribano,

I know Costa Dorada but have not been there.
Basically I do not know who I could go with.

yo soy de Barcelona, encantado.

Ailsa -> RE: London Flamenco (Jun. 19 2007 16:52:23)

Hola Cosa! Encantada!

I live just outside of London, but there's no flamenco here in the leafy suburbs, so I come into London regularly. Both my guitar and dance teachers teach in London so I'm there at least once a week. I also go to the London Pena sometimes and try to see any visiting flamenco artists.

I like the Forum because I get to hear the views of other people who love flamenco as much as I do! So welcome, and join in the discussions.

Saludos

Ailsa

Hi all,

Thanks for this warm welcome.

Donald -> RE: London Flamenco (Jun. 19 2007 21:16:09)

cosa, Costa Dorada is now owned by Felipe de Algeciras in partnership with Kevin de Clydebank. It may be renamed Nueva Dorada but anyway its flamenco is alive and well with performances by Felipe. Donald

Stu -> RE: London Flamenco (Jun. 19 2007 21:35:30)

Hey folks,
There has been talk of a foro flamenco get together in some undecided place, but perhaps us london flamencos should organise something here in Blighty (England incase you were wondering), Jbash, Ailsa, cosa and the rest, perhaps we could go down to Costa Dorada one eve or the pena?? I am the same as you cosa, the only place I get to talk about flamenco is right here!!!

Who is Kevin de Clydebank?
Is it an aka for Jim Opfer?? [:D][:D]

cheers,

Ron

Stu -> RE: London Flamenco (Jun. 19 2007 21:38:41)

Kevin de Clydebank sounds like someone from up your way Ron!!!

Ron.M -> RE: London Flamenco (Jun. 19 2007 21:50:37)

Hmm.. It would probably be more like "Angus del Dee" here in N.Scotland.
"Jimmy de Paisley" etc is much more Central Belt. [:D][:D]

cheers,

Ron

Ailsa -> RE: London Flamenco (Jun. 19 2007 23:38:52)

Hey Stu, brilliant idea!

The next Pena is on Sunday 8th July, El Grupo Carambito are playing. But equally happy to visit Costa Dorada - I've never been there so I'd be interested.

What do you guys all think?

Ailsa

Donald -> RE: London Flamenco (Jun. 20 2007 21:07:49)

Its a real exile. If they can do it, why can't we. Sounds a lot better anyway than the likes of Govan boy. Donald

Stu -> RE: London Flamenco (Jun. 21 2007 13:33:44)

Hi,
Yeah i'm up for either of those ideas.
I went to Costa Dorada years ago when I'd just started playing flamenco and had a real good night. I actually walked past it yesterday and had a quick peek inside and it looked quite different. Think they've had a refurb. I thinks its more of a resturant than a bar/hang out.

As for the Pena on July the 8th. Where is it?

Stu

Ailsa -> RE: London Flamenco (Jun. 21 2007 16:59:44)

Hi Stu,

The Pena is at a club just north of Euston. It's not a posh venue, in fact some might say it's a bit seedy (so maybe right for flamenco? Hmmm, that's gonna get some comments...) But the good thing is that the bar sells drinks at club prices!!!

Does Costa Dorada have flamenco on every night? Or just weekend nights? Anyone know?

How about the rest of you Londoners - anyone else want to meet up? We're real nice, honest!

marc55 -> RE: London Flamenco (Jun. 22 2007 0:48:43)

I go to the pena occasionally (and their group guitar classes) - I've been to the costa dorada a couple of times recently and (saturday nights) it's very touristy - Tito banging out Alegrias and Sevillanas for party groups - still worth a visit - just have a drink at the bar! Do a google for london flamenco and Ramon ???(name escapes me) comes up seems to be stuff south of the river which might be worth a look.

Ailsa -> RE: London Flamenco (Jun. 22 2007 8:42:54)

Hi Marc,

Would that be Ramon Ruiz? I've been told he is an amazing player.

I went to this year's Pena guitar course too, so maybe we've seen each other across a crowded workshop. It certainly was crowded on the first session - I was sitting on the floor at the back because we had run out of chairs! Anyway I'm helping to organise the next course, so I'll put the details up on the Foro when they are finalised.

A

Stu -> RE: London Flamenco (Jun. 22 2007 11:03:35)

How are those workshops? I've always been tempted to go to some kind of guitar workshop but doesn't it just make you go crazy when theres a room full of musicians playing seperately, there must be a point where it just becomes noise. or am I wrong?

Stu

Ailsa -> RE: London Flamenco (Jun. 22 2007 11:27:29)

Well guys, obviously now that I'm organising it they course is going to be excellent! [;)] Just kidding - John who has done it for the last couple of years did a great job. [:)]

Stu I've been on quite a few courses/workshops, and no I think it works really well. You learn from what other people are doing as well as the teacher.

Last year the Pena course was held at the YMCA and the room was just too small for the number of people that turned up. Great to have so many people interested, but it was a bit chaotic. [:(] However this year we are going to use the same venue as the Pena and it's much bigger, so there's won't be that problem.

We have a really brilliant teacher, Tony (Francisco Antonio), who is both very enthusiastic and clear. Tony will teach the guitar accompaniment and falsettas to a palo (don't know which one yet - last year is was tientos/tangos) and then later in the course a professional dancer and singer join the group, and we get to see how it all fits together.

Plus there's a bar, and we can all go for a drink afterwards. [;)] Or during.... [:D][:D][:D]

Anyway, more info will be on the Foro soon when I've finalised the dates.

Romanza -> RE: London Flamenco (Jun. 22 2007 13:43:53)

Hi all
would be great to have a foroflamenco meet in London. Like the sound of the new guitar course too - the YMCA room was like a sauna sometimes!!
Another option for a night out if everyone would consider venturing to Crystal palace would be a tapas restaurant where my old guitar teacher, Juan Ramirez, performs once a month with singer and dancer. It is usually the last thursday of the month. Lots of good bars to for pre-post refreshments.
Cosa, Crystal Palace is not too far from you either!
Romanza (Jacqueline)

cosa -> RE: London Flamenco (Jun. 28 2007 22:33:53)

Hi all,
Why not Romanza. This is not very far from mine.
Anyway, let's meet up next Sunday! I want to see how the atmosphere in the pena is.
Who's coming?

Salud y libertad

Stu -> RE: London Flamenco (Jun. 29 2007 14:17:54)

Oh damn!! Is the Pena this Sunday? For some reason I thought it was on the 12th (don't know why.) I'm definately up for it but I'm working on Sunday, so depending on when I finish and how tired I am, I'll have to decide then.

Stu

Romanza -> RE: London Flamenco (Jun. 29 2007 14:23:56)

It is next Sunday 8th
http://www.flamenco-london.org.uk/events.html
i don't think i can go but hope to catch up with everyone another time

Ailsa -> RE: London Flamenco (Jul. 3 2007 8:15:52)

Hi all,

I'm definitely going to be at the Pena in London on Sunday so if you are around come and say hello, it would be great to meet you, buy you a beer etc. I'm easy to recognise as my hair is in braids with pink and red streaked through (yeah I know - no muy flamenco!). Or look at the celebrity look-alikes thread and you'll see me.

Hope to see you Sunday.

Ailsa

Stu -> RE: London Flamenco (Jul. 8 2007 13:28:58)

Hey Ailsa,
I have an important football match today, and what with the heat I suspect once its over I'll just want to sit back and not move, so I dont expect to make it to the pena this eve.
however you never know.....
I'll see how I feel after.

Stu

Ailsa -> RE: London Flamenco (Jul. 8 2007 13:38:46)

OK Stu, thanks for letting me know. I'm just about to post some info about another Pena event on 22nd July, so look out for that.

Ailsa

Stu -> RE: London Flamenco (Jul. 9 2007 12:00:06)

Hey ailsa,

How was last night??

stu

Ailsa -> RE: London Flamenco (Jul. 9 2007 12:07:36)

It was fab! Sorry you didn't make it. I'd not heard Grupo Carambito before, and they were all excellent. Special praise for their guest dancer Natalia Garcia-Huidobro. She was absolutely stunning and inspiring.

Maybe see some of you guys next time?

Ailsa
