I currently travel about 150km round trip to have flamenco guitar lessons, which I take every 2-3 weeks.
It is a long trip but my tutor is very flexible and often my hour lesson turns into two at no extra cost. The travel is really a bind, so last night I visited a tutor of classical guitar who claimed also to teach flamenco. Lessons here are more expensive, but traveling time is less, so I would be able to have lessons more frequently.
In my humble opinion his flamenco playing was not up to the same standard as my current tutor, but good!
Is it possible for a tutor to have the ability to teach both flamenco and classical, when really his heart is with classical?

I'd say no, but it really depends on what he knows and what you know.

Hey Zorro,

That's a tricky one, and I think quite a personal decision. I travel 30 miles each way (how many K is that?) to see someone who is both a clear teacher and an amazing player, but exclusively flamenco. That's really important to me, because that's the music I want to learn. I could see someone who is a classical guitar teacher, but maybe has some knowledge of flamenco, very close to home. I could also find a flamenco teacher closer to home, but I think not such high quality. I've no doubt I could learn things from either of those people, but I want to cut straight to the chase! But then impatience is my middle name.

I guess it depends what you want to learn, what stage you are at, and what the skills of the teachers are.

Sorry that probably doesn't help except to say, it's a decision a lot of us go through!

Good luck

A

Hi Ailsa and Mark,
Thanks for your posts. Decided to stay with my original tutor and make the journey every two weeks. Interested to find out the furthest distance Foro members travel for a lesson, or if you teach, how far your students travel??
