I have a problem with picado.
When I do i-m picado it is even but I prefer m-i because I can go faster then. But when I do so, it starts to gallop. Like: long - short - long - short.

Can it be solved, are there excercises ? I practise it slow, trying to do the opposite rythm ( short-slow ). But it doesn't seem to be sufficient. Help !

I dont exactly understand the explonation it would feel weird starting with M but if its uneven its probably because your M is weaker than your I.

you can stregten your M by practicing all your scales with M A instead of I M

I would think i-finger is weak. M follows quick after I finger. So M finger is quicker then I finger. Or am I embarrysingly wrong here ?[&:]

I think what Grisha is saying is that by accenting every third note your i finger and then your m finger will alternate accenting while playing im or mi picados and will therefore smooth out your picado. As my picado basically stinks, I'm going to try it tonight. Thanks Grisha!!

try video taping your r/hand too(close up and playing picado at different speeds), and play it back and really scrutinise whats happening and at what point/speed it starts to gallop maybe?

i dont know but i would say the I fingher is the most used out of the hand , pushing buttons, pulling triggers, picking noses etc.

unless its just in your case, most people are beeing held back by the M when it comes to picados , loudness and evenes. imo

in either case its a good idea to practice all your scales with all the finger combinations it evens out the power in your fingers and your hand.

I practice paradiddle type figures which I find very useful. They share the benefit of triplets in that each beat starts on a different finger but the repeated stroke pushes your reflexes.

The pattern is imii mimm in two sets of semiquavers.

I practice this along to a buleria click track (starting at thirty percent speed ) which means that as I do my technical practice I get lot of listening and awareness practice in at the same time.

Mute the strings with the left hand and be a drummer. The repeated notes are the key and focus on making it groove and not trying to play too fast as it will push your reflexes anyway.

It may not be all bad. I've heard some flamenco tunes where there is a clear imitation of horses hooves clip clopping along. I believe that you could use your galloping picado to good effect here.

common problem. Grisha's solution is the simplest and best. But you HAVE TO USE A METRONOME to do the triplets even. In the end, these things are rhythmic problems that need to be solved.

No, I have the same issue in that my 'm' finger is stronger than my 'i' finger and I also feel it natural to lead with 'm' in picado.
The solution is to be aware of this and always think about putting more effort on the 'i' strokes and listen for the percussive quality all the time to try to even things out.
I don't know about you Koella but my theory is that my 'm' finger is now stronger because of the 'right click' function of my computer mouse which I use most of the day, most days.
