flamencoguru -> Squeaky tuners? (Jun. 9 2007 15:41:21)

Hello to all of the luthiers (or anybody who knows),

I was wondering what I should put on some squeaky tuners? Oil, graphite.... what kind of lubricant?

Un saludo, Errol

squeaky tuners usually are the result of the white barrel rubbing on the wood of the drilled hole ie, they are drilled slightly wrong or just too tight or have some lacquer in the hole from the finishing. If you remove the tuners then with a piece of dowling with 180 grit paper wrapped aroung you can open slightly the outer holes, the inner holes should justs be cleaned a little. Then you can put the machines back on again and this should solve the problem. Sometimes a small drop of vaseline on the barrel just where it meets the plate can also help but sparingly. A light machine oil (3in1) one drop on the worm is good for general lubrication.
Hope this sorts out the problem. It is really annoying to have these squeaks!
