Hey mates,

I was thinking of having a go at Panaderos Flamencos. Does it belong to a certain palo, because I can't figure out whether or not it does? What would you rate it as in terms of difficulty?

Ramzi, I would rate it as very difficult technically (moving rapidly from picado to index etc.) but it is really simple and easily conceivable as melody/composition. Still I'd propose you to try the rather easier "Mantilla de Feria", which is also a not-so-flamenco piece from the same Paco record with great harmony skipping from minore to majore and vice versa.

Thanks mate. I'll have a look at Mantilla de Feria. Does Mantilla de Feria belong to any palo, or what? Are these (Mantilla and Panaderos) classical pieces that someone else composed but that have been played by PdL, or did he compose them and simply not make them in any of the known flamenco palos?

i think "Panaderos" is a "classical spanish dance. Not flamenco.
but this piece is sort of sevillanas in a way

Both pieces, and a couple others by Esteban are "classical" in structure as compositions, but not based specifically on flamenco palos, but should not be confused with classical guitar music either. Sort of like Gerardo's "Sevilla" we discussed before which is loosely based on flamenco palos or sevillanas, but is more of a "composition" containing the elements. A true flamenco palo can be improvised on and those pieces are not improvised at all.

Anyway, the Panaderos is quite close to the spanish folk rhythm "Seguidillas" from where the misspelled "siguiyrias" probably took its name. At the end of Paco's version of Panaderos he sticks in a falseta from Sabicas's Alegrias in A major on Flamenco Puro. That falseta itself is better considered a "bulerias" falseta because of the speed. See how things get mixed up?

I personally prefer the ORIGINAL version recorded by Esteban de Sanlucar. A bit slower with a nice rhythmic swing, rather than a picado exercise. Check out the orginal version if you can find it.

When I first learned panaderos, my teacher remarked that it was way too fast for the dance, so I think there is a dance that goes with it, but I've never seen it danced. Has anyone here?
